very few applications use it at the moment.

The mirror (in extras/downloads) - http://maemo.org/downloads/product/Maemo5/mirror/

I have a health-checker in development (Extras - devel) that also checks it, and technically saves a picture ... but not really using it as a camera, as it is such bad quality!

I don't think there's any application available yet so you can take photos with it, but there is a application called "Mirror" which films with the front camera I believe so you can see how you look. Also I think there is a command to use the camera but I really don't remember....

Here's the long winded way, but works

In x-terminal:
Code:
gst-launch v4l2camsrc device=/dev/video1 num-buffers=10 ! dspjpegenc ! filesink location=/home/user/MyDocs/frontcam.jpg

No you cannot change the orientation - the application you are using must support portrait mode (like the phone application, web browser, Free42 calculator, FBReader and probably others do). Although you can setup the Phone application so that it launches when you rotate the device.

And yes, as far as I know, there are 2 profiles only. You can't also assign different ringing sound to specific contact, assign contacts to groups, block calls from specific group, change profile based on your time schedule (automatic silence when on a meeting) etc.

Needless to say this is a matter of software and as such it may change in future firmware updates.

It seems to me that you bought the N900 without doing some research upfront...

regards,
Jan
