Hi, folks,

I've got a brand-new N900 here, and have two problems with it: the wifi always reports "no connections," and Bluetooth won't turn on.

I've tried using various WLAN's, with no security on; checked signal strength with other devices; reset the device; taken out the battery, replaced it, turned it back on; and reflashed it to the current N900 firmware.

DMesg reports: "w11251: ERROR timeout waiting for the hardware to complete initialization"

I called Nokia Customer care, and after about 1.5 hours on the phone the "N900 expert" with whom I spoke determined the phone hardware to be defective... But the Nokia Store people--to whom I'd return the phone for a replacement--tell me there are no N900s available, and that I'd have to wait and take my chances on a replacement.

So, I'm asking forum folks: does everyone else's analysis confirm mine, and the "N900 Expert's" opinion--this phone's hardware is defective? Or is there something I might be overlooking?

what says

iwconfig and ifconfig?

is wlan0 present with the MAC Adress??


Scan wit Wifieye for WLAN
Did you find some?

And to the Bluetooth... ahm try Bluezwitch-Widget to activate


When nothin above works, then it sounds like a Hardware problem, because you flashed the n900.
Did you flash the eMMC too?
When not. try this please


on Windows (please use WindowsXP 32bit and turn off Firewall and Anti-Virus)

1. Turn off the n900
2. open up the keyboard
3. run flasher-3.5.exe -F image.bin -f
4. put the usb cable in and hold U
5. flashing will begin
6. unhold the U key
7. when the image is flashed it shows succesful
8. run flasher-3.5.exe -F eMMC.bin -f -R
9. now the flasher erase the rootfs and MyDocs
10. after succesful flash pull out the usb cable. The n900 will reboot

WARNING ALL DATA WILL BE LOST BY THIS FLASH

Thanks so much for the counsel! I appreciate it a lot.

However, I can't execute the codelines, since I don't have a working network interface (and I don't have a data plan)--so I can't install rootsh. (Apparently it wouldn't work to find and install a deb for rootsh either--since command-line installing requires root, no?). Do you have an idea for how to do this?

I tried reflashing the eMMC and the firmware (had just flashed firmware before), and the interfaces behave the same as before--I've got a "no connections found" error, and Bluetooth doesn't turn on. Sigh.

Download it an copy via usb cable to the n900

first rootsh and then the other 2



maybe we can think to install the power-kernel
perhaps this would work....
but try this first. then we think about that

Thanks again--I really appreciate it! But I don't think I can use .deb files--no access to the dpkg command from the command-line until rootsh is installed, so it's kind of a chicken-or-egg problem.

Sigh. Thanks again for all your help. I'm going to return the unit to Nokia for a refund, and watch for the phone to be posted again.

dont need to have rootsh installed
you can install it trough the filemanager

save it to mydocs and open it per click

the install should start automatical

Thanks _again!_. The rootsh install worked, but the two other installs failed on dependencies. (I presume since I don't have wireless-tools) iwlist / iwconfig doesn't show anything either. ifconfig, however, works and shows only the phone's data / cell connection.

I'm just about to pack up the unit to send back. I feel reasonably sure it's a hardware problem... I appreciate _so much_ the work and time you spent in helping me to in diagnose this problem.
