The deal is like this :

When I drive, I got my N900 mounted using a vacuum mount in landscape mode, held from bottom and top by the mount arm.
In that way, I cannot open the slider at all, and the phone sits firmly without the danger of falling off + thats the logical way for a gps to be.

Now when I want to call someone, I press my calender widget, but I can't search it! and I cannot even scroll to a specific area at once, i'll have to keep scrolling till I find what I want, not very safe when driving if you ask me...

If there was a way to type in 2 letters with the virtual keyboard to minimize my search time, that would have been awesome.

So anyone knows how to do it? If I conclude this is not possible,
It's going to brainstorm.

Thx guys,
Eitam.

If you press the phone button in portrait mode. Then press select contact. Down the right hand side there are shortcuts to letters.
ABC DEF GHI
These will automatically go to first contact with that letter.

What if you mount the N900 with an open slider?
That would help until someone comes up with something better.

Hi, me too, I found a holder that holds bottom and sides so I can keep the keyboard open, also hacked it about to make room for microusb charging so I can keep all services on for long journeys.

I can't, it will block the headphones + charge jack and won't suport the phone from below.

I am looking for a software solution not a hardware solution.
I don't see a reason making this impossible.

I think someone should open a brainstorm to add ''Search'' in the different applications. I had the same issue in the media player where I have to open the keyboard, type a character, close the keyboard, tick the textbox, and THEN be able to enter Turkish characters to search

Unfortunately, it can't be done right now. But one good workaround could be made by using the "Actman" (in other words, desktop activity manager) app. In this, you could set up an activity "CAR" which could have main contacts on your desktops, say three of four. This way you could have 30 of your main contacts on the desktops while driving and you could call any one of them by easy swipes. More details on the app are in the thread link below:
