Would it be possible to make this:
When the application is started it turns screen off.
It then waits for a gesture and starts for example the phoneapp, or selects silent profile.
I would prefer it to be totally costumizible, being able to learn new gestures and add new scripts.
(gesture a heart, and it calls the wife )
It would not "listen" for gestures when the proximity sensor is covered (in pocket).

Is it possible to do?
Would it drain the battery?
Am I the only one who would find this usefull?

Edit:
And a fullscreen widget, so you wouldn't have to lock the phone to use gestures. This widget could be a good spot to sell comercial, and the developer would make money

Love the idea. Might be complex - as screenlock will have to be overcome, which in itself opens up a whole new world of problems when the phone is in your pocket.....

Maybe it could capture all the h/w buttons as well?
(Except the ones that unlocks the phone.)
Fullscreen app capturing all input from screen.
Wouldn't that work as a screenlock?

Is it a bad idea, impossible to do, or do all developers find it more usefull to change boot video?
