This has been discussed as a problem on other threads, viz. http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=39765 but then i am curious to know if there is a way to force the N900 to recognize the SIM. This way we could force the SIM to remain in the recognized state each time the SIM was de recognized!

Do you even understand yourself?
First of all i think you should continue the conversation in old thread until you actually get the answer/resolution for the problem(so u can start new thread with instructions)
Second of all as i understand - it's or physical problem (sim card or phone) and so u can't force until u repair. or software - so it's bug and if there would be any resolution - it would be out as bugfix or patch. and you would find and see it here around.
or you really think if there were no help for other people - if you post actually you the special to get the answer?

buddy, this is not a physical problem. i ended up replacing my SIM and even reflashing my device. from what i have noticed, the phone de-recognizes the SIM the minute i connect to the GPRS/EDGE network!
