On X Terminal, type "du -sh .modest". It should print something like
2.9M .modest
meaning that you're using 2.9 MiB of space.
Note that you can also move emails to SD cards from within modest if you insert one.

I am sure the mails are stored somewhere in the disk, since I can read the old ones even in offline mode (I mean without internet connection).
