Hi all,

I'm getting my first taste of Maemo tomorrow with the N900.

Although a hardcore Symbian fan, I'm switching to Maemo with a firm belief that it will define future for smart-phone/tablets.

I'd like to gain some tips into setting up my N900.
I've heard stuff like 'repositories' , 'sudo' ' root access'
and a few others which i'm clueless about

So am hoping to get some pointers on what to get done once i pop the cherry (important install/un installs, etc)

Cheers!

Get used to the phone first and then search the forum. Your questions have been answered here long back.

Well, Maemo will be the father (or mother, take your pick) of MeeGo within the year.

Repositories:

These are lists of applications. Usually the pre-installed repositories are good enough for end-users. The pre-installed ones are where the stable applications are.

They're the firmware, Nokia applications, Ovi Store, and Extras repositories.

There are two more official repositories:

Extras-Testing, which is a beta stage repository (to get feedback on bugs before it gets to extras). You shouldn't wander too much here, but if an application is there, the developer has deemed it safe enough for public use.

Extras-Devel, which is an alpha stage repository, and shouldn't be touched unless you know what you're doing.

There are also various unofficial repositories, like qole's.

Sudo and Root Access

Prerequisite application: rootsh (in Extras)

Root is basically the "super-administrator" account in Linux.

Normally, there are locks in place to prevent you from severely damaging system files.

If you use the command
Code:
sudo gainroot
in the Terminal, you become Root, and have access to modifying those system files.

This can be useful for modding or fixing files, but if you make a critical mistake, you might have to reflash (similar to a reformat on Windows).

If you live on the safe side, there's no worries, but just remember that some of the modding software, like powatool, make use of the sudo command in the background.

Hope this helps, and welcome to the community.

Why all the long faces?

Yeah, if it's not too late already, kahf, you might want to wait until the Harmattan, or MeeGo (two different things, for now) device comes out,
