Just want to share something.

I just got my N800 yesterday and I initially was very upset that I could not connect to my Netgear WPN824 Router. Basically, I could not see its SSID when I try to connect to it. Manually setting it doesn't work either.

Apparently, the problem was because I am running the WPN824 Wifi on Channel 13. Changing it to Channel 2 solved this problem

Depends where you are located (or more accurately, which language/region you have defined in your device). If you are in the USA, channel 13 is an illegal channel so the N800 won't scan for it.

Only channels 1-11 are allowed in the USA, 1-13 in Europe and 1-14 in Japan (I've no idea about any other regions/countries - possibly 1-14).

So if I plan on traveling from the US to Europe with a N800 should I flash the N800 with the European version of the os to be able to connect to all wifi channels? Would this work?

There is only one global version of the firmware - it's not region specific.

In order to enforce the legally permissible WiFi channels in each region, the firmware must decide from a configuration setting where the device is located, and on that basis to then limit the available WiFi channels. My guess is the firmware uses locale/region and/or language settings to determine what WiFi channels should be allowed. If you choose a US locale, you get the limited 1-11 US channels, and if you choose UK you get 1-13 etc.

I'm not saying for sure this is how the 770/N800 determines the available channels, but it would seem to be the most obvious choice given that there is only one firmware for all regions.

This is a problem with the new Apple Airport Extreme.

Mine is a European version that was looking for channel 13 but my MBP is from the States. No problem though. You should be able to find plenty of access points to work with. Even with my WiFi sniffer, I have not seen anyone on a channel higher than 11.

I don't think this is correct as I have mine set to Singapore and Language to UK. Anyway, still investigating

Yeah, I'm not sure what limits the WiFi channels but language/region seemed the obvious choice however it could be something else entirely (no idea what!)

What is your max channel when using Singapore/UK - the maximum channel should be logged in dmesg when performing a scan.

We are talking about wifi here I think. Try picking a middle channel, say 6 and see if it connects.

Well, dmesg say it scans 11 channels. So I'm guessing its the default channels from 1 to 11 then.

For you in Singapore, 1-11. For me in the UK, it's 1-13.

What's the difference between your N800 and mine? Physically nothing, just a different region - yours is Singapore, mine is UK, both languages are UK.

Perhaps 1-11 is, as you suggest, the default (Nokia erring on the side of caution).
