I'm so glad I found such a group of helpful people. I'm a new n800 owner and I have a couple of questions for ya'll...

1. Is there a wiki or doc for newbies who have never worked in linux to underatand how to install additional applications and all this fun stuff I see?
The install process seems more than a typical "click this".
Can someone clear up what Bora and Minstral are and how they relate to my n800?

2. Is there a application out there for the n800 that can view comic book format files (.cbr)? If one of you clever types know how to make a simple image viewer for these you'd be my hero!

3. Are there certain bluetooth keyboards I have to buy or can I use any bluetooth keyboard? Do you have a suggestion for the most protable one?

All for now... Thanks!

1. Yes www.maemo.org has some great wiki's and info, not all newbie centric though. I have a n800 coming next week and plan to put together a newbie centric blog of how to do simple things up to complex things, referencing back where I got the info from.

Oh and minstral and what not.. those are version releases.

2. Don't know

3. Pretty much any bluetooth keyboard should work from what I have read. I am going to purchase one of the ones by stowaway.

Oh, if you could do that you have no idea how much in your debt I'll feel!

I really like my new N800 but feel so handicapped as all I have been able to do is add "one-click" items (media-streamer and the FM radio).

I've run CP/M, TPM, DOS, OS/2 and Windows but have never touched Linux before. When people on this board explain how to use Xterm, become root, talk about garages etc it is all so much Greek that I don't have any idea where to start.

A "newbie centric blog" geared for the N800 user is EXACTLY what I need!

Thanks in advance!

More specifically, Mistral (and subsequently 'sciricco' and now 'gregale') relates to OS2006 for the 770 tablet. Bora relates to OS2007 for the N800 tablet.

I'd say read carefully, one sentence at a time, and then post to ask for further explanation about the first sentence that you don't understand. I'm sure you'd start getting the hang of things quicker than you think.

That will be great too, of course.

Hmm.. so I was looking at their page... do you need to run the comics cbr file through a converter to read it in evince or can it deal with the cbr directly? I'm unclear by their info.... I hope they update it for the n800!

Also... does anyone know how to get the internet connection working via bluetooth with a treo 680? I have the 2 devices paired.. but they don't seem to be talking... any ideas?

Thanks!

May I add my sincere interest in a n00b guide as well My n800 arrives on tuesday and I am very excited (but nervous) about using it. I'll be starting off with 1 2gb sd card and a set of screen protetors.

Thanks in advance for all the help I'm know I'll get!

With the N800, you can actually do one-click installs. Check out http://downloads.maemo.org/.

It's quite a clever system -- what you download is a script that tells Application Manager to add the repository for that application, and then install the application from it. Quite neat.
