Now that there are starting to be more and more applications, it is getting harder to keep the track of the overall image of what is out there for us N900 users. Apps are in various sources (Extras, Devel, Testing, Ovi, Independet repos...) and not allways so consistantly organized. And the lists are allways program-oriented. I would like to use an another approach: What I want to do with my N900? And what program should I use to do that.

My idea is to list the apps according to the use case, like: "I want to: Listen to music". And then I see a list of apps that can do that. With a small "review" and comparison according to the use case. Many apps can be used for many purposes. Like media player plays music, videos and internet-radio. So it would be under all the three use cases - reviewed and compired according to each use case.

A early prototype of the app catalog can be seen here:
http://demo.pingviinit.fi/iwantto

It is a simple web page designed for the N900 Some example content is added under the "Find information" category.

I have already made the database and the UI for the page. But the big job will be adding the apps and reviews. So I would like to present this idea before further development - to see if there is any need for this or if this is already being done somewhere.

There's a good application list coming from all repos in http://www.my-maemo.com , Michal Jerz's site. You can get inspiration there.

So essentially its a more verbose version of categories? (I want to see my location -> Location and Navigation; I want to Listen to music -> Multimedia)

IMHO, a better approach would be something centered around tag clouds. Something like http://debtags.alioth.debian.org/cloud/ for example.

BTW, a lot of your ideas seem to already be implemented in appdownloader. Check it out.
