i was having excellent luck with lehto's kernel on 1.1 and when i upgrade to 1.2 it got a lot slower. i figured, 'no biggie, i just need to overclock it a bit. so i installed titan's kernel via app repository and even when i bump the speed up to 850 the phone is dog slow. i get stuttering in audio if anything else is happening, webpages very slow to load, ui very laggy. reboot at least once a day to no avail. Im wondering if its because this kernel is just bad or maybe i have too many apps or one or two resource hogs (im sure there are at least a handful from extras testing, shame on me). i did a conky screenshot this is with media p[layer playing mp3 (no fancy codecs) titans kernel at 850, one webpage open (to this forum), and basic windows like conversations, phone, email, and conky and thats it.

can anyone see anything unusual in that conky screenshot? is there a terminal command i can run to isolate/identify/kill bad processes?

i upgraded to 1.2 OTA im wondering if i need to start with a fresh hard flash, but i dont know where to start as ive never flashed the n900. i would rather not deal with the time of reinstalling everything but if its the only way to get speed back im down to try it!

Thanks!

this random slowness of the phone has happened to others too. me included. i think there was a thread about fixing this.
i up clocked mine to 1GHz and it seems to have solved the problem for me. not saying you should do the same thing but just a tip.

a good clean flash isnt difficult (search wiki for flash guide) and the backup reinstalls (or makes it very easy for you) all the apps. all settings and data is saved - if you leave the emmc alone.
just remember to backup on external storage if possible.

wouldnt restoring the backup possibly recreate the instability im having?

i cant clock over 900, the audio sounds crackly, so i stay at 850

at first re-flash, the ui is fast and snappy enough (in stock kernel 600mhz). but as you flood the device's memory, begins to slow down'

try doing the following while on stock kernel (codes are in sudo root):

Code:
echo 150000 > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/ondemand/sampling_rate
the default is 300000

Code:
echo 75 > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/ondemand/up_threshold
the default is 95

in my case, it becomes snappier even @600mhz

if you notice a lot more battery consumption' do this

Code:
echo 1 > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/ondemand/ignore_nice_load
default is 0

for more info, search the forums....forgot what thread this was posted.

N900: 1000/1150mhz; sampling_rate 15; up_threshold 150000;

i believe those are permanent, do a reboot and do this

Code:
cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/ondemand/sampling_rate
if the result is 150000, its permanent

Code:
cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/ondemand/up_threshold
if the result is 75, its permanent

if you are using titan's kernel in changing max freq/settings, you dont have to do those, because it is already set up on those sampling rate and up threshold settings.

I found ignore nice load is the cause of snappiness in some case, because it also ignore the processes which nice value under 0, like UI, and you know the result.
