I can not get the application manager to download files. I have wiped the N810 clean and tried to start from scratch, but no success. Any thoughts ????

This happened to me actually...I thought it was the repository issue (discussed elsewhere) but actually my problem was that for whatever reason the internal memory card was being mounted as read-only. i think the card is used for storing downloaded files before actual install -- and that's why nothing was getting installed. i solved this by backing up the internal memory card files (maps, music) and then formatting it. After this installs worked.

i suggest you try deleting something (that's not important!! from the card to see if it's read-only to see if this is happening to you. note: the card didn't appear to be read-only to me, but it was...so use file manager to test this by deleting some non-important file, don't believe it if it doesn't say read only in file manager.

Let me know if this helps. Good luck!

i think you are on to something. I tried to back up the internal memory card and it told me that it could not back up virtual memory. So, I went into the control panel to remove or re-size the virtual memory on the internal card. It did not let me do it. So, I am not sure what next.

OK..sounds similar. So, what I did was:

I didn't use the Backup/Restore program. I backed up the memory card by plugging the N810 into my computer with the USB cable. I use Ubuntu, so the memory card was just detected as a USB drive, so I selected and copied everything off of it to my computer and then disconnected the cable (after unmounting first). So I didn't delete anything over the USB connection, just copied things off of the N810. I believe you should be able to do the same thing with Windows, it that's what you use. I'd especially suggest you backup the maps since I don't know where you can download those from. If you use Windows, maybe look around the forums to see how to copy files with the USB cable, that should work fine.

After this, I went into the File Manager (Utilities -> File Manager) and pressed down the stylus on the "Internal Memory Card" until the menu came up, and then selected "Format memory card". After that was done, I shutdown and restarted the device, tried installing something (Canola2), noticed it worked, and then plugged in the N810 into my computer again with the USB cable and restored the maps directory and other stuff I had there (some music).

I think "Virtual memory" is exactly what's going on here, it's on the internal card and read-only for some reason. I saw these problems on some other thread too, don't remember which one, and it sounded like this was something to do with the new OS2008 update...a bug. Anyway, hopefully you'll get it solved like this too.

I believe you will find the answers you seek in this thread. Around post #8 tells how to fix your card.

the format card option is greyed out and not available since the card is being used as virtual memory. All attempts to change this have failed. Do you think I should reflash the device and then not perform any backups to see if it is something in my settings ?

Take a look at the thread PinCushionQueen just posted about...that's the one I read earlier too. I didn't end up following those instructions, formatting worked for me, but maybe they will help you. I think you need "becomeroot" installed though (I didn't have it and had no way of installing it either after this problem showed up).

This is my first post. I recently got an N810 and after I updated it with the new OS updates, I could not use the Application Manager to install programs - very upsetting. I just wanted to confirm the success of using the advice from these posts as the information lead me to fixing the problem. Breifly: The Second Internal memory card was somehow set to read only. I could not undo this with my virtual mem on, and virtual mem would not disable itself. Ultimately, I turned the unit off, hooked it to the USB cord to my Windows XP computer and turned it on. My computer could then play with both the internal cards. I copied as much as I could off the 2gig internal and then formated it (using Windows). I turned off my N810, unplugged it from USB and turned it back on. Virtual mem was disabled now, and the drive had write access again. I then had the amazing ability to install programs again - I was thrilled. Thankyou all for help, for others, the above was summary of steps incase you are having the same issues.

Farquar:

I am having trouble in Windows getting to a place that gives me the option to reformat the internal memory card. Can you send me a little more detail ? I called Nokia and they were useless and told me to send the unit back for evaluation.
