I just got a second hand HTC Hero as a work phone. One of the things I really like is Peep, which is Twitter that runs in the background and if you get a notification, like a mention or a direct message, an icon pops up in the taskbar to let you know.

Is there anything like this for Maemo 5? I installed the Mauku widget but not only would it not load any tweets, saying i'd exceeded or something, it also wiped all the widgets from my desktop when i uninstalled it. I use Witter as a Twitter app, but do we have, or is anyone working on, something that gives notifications like a background daemon?

You could try khweeteur. It has notifications and you can set the search interval.

You might like it. It's in extras-testing though.

I did have that installed actually but got rid of it because at the time it lacked some of the more important features that i use in Twitter, and Witter covers them. The only thing the N900 seems to be missing from my own perspective is the social network - not universally of course, the contact and chat integration is second to none, i just mean the social network update side of things.

I could just leave Witter open, but what I like about Peep in Android is that you don't see it, i didn't even open it (so god knows if and how to turn it off, Android gives me a headache when it comes to settings) and I'd love Maemo to have something similar, just like an SMS notification when you get a mention without having an app open

There's a Twitter plugin for Conversations, but when last I tried it it was VERY battery intensive and doesn't seem to be under active development, or at least to have been updated in ages. Which is a shame...

I considered that but i don't want all my twitter contacts in my address book to be honest, if it just did conversations it'd be perfect

Acording to this post, importing into Contacts is optional. I haven't used it (or Twitter) for ages, so I cna't say how well it works. I should also have said earlier, the pugin is in -devel so may cause problems, install at your own risk etc.

I got into the game late but I believe the twitter plugin for Conversations no longer works due to different authorization for twitter. At least that has been my finding since trying to add it in.

i use a transport on my ejabberd server, and do all twitter through xmpp. If that is beyond you, maybe you can try tweet.im, it is the same thing.

Not heard of that, can you explain what it is and how it works?
