I usually keep my cell phones by itself, either on my shorts/pants side pocket, or in a separated compartment in my fanny/backpack, though i somtimes endup dropping it (usually it's not from above about 60 centimeters. Do i need to to acquire some sort of case or screen protectors?

I keep my N900 in a phone sock when not in use and I have still noticed some scratches on the screen.

I would get a screen protector at the very least.

On my N73 i notice the fingerprints on the screen way more than the scratches (i actually had to wipe the screen a bit to see the scratches), will the N900 scratches be any more noticeable?

you definitely need a case, as i have dropped my phone couple of times, that to on road. I cursed myself for not having a case at that time...but the damage was done.

My scratches are hardly noticable, I have to hold the phone at an oblique angle to see them.

However; when I use the stylus it grates over them and makes a horrid little noise. A bit like nails on a blackboard

YES. I tried 3 different ones before getting a Zagg Invisible Shield. It wasn't the easiest to put on but it stays on well and fits nicely. I only have the screen protector. The biggest advantage I've noticed is it is easier to clean.

you know honestly, it just varies and depends on how well you keep your gadgets. i dont have a screen protector or a case on my n900, but when i put it in my bag or pocket i have the sfbags suede "sock" which does it justice. and i dont have a single scratch or dent on mine (knock on wood).

well, this is rather a stupid question. If you paid for something expensive, you'd obviously want to spend a little bit extra to give it more protection.

I dunno how much u paid, but the N900 in general isn't cheap, it's quite expensive, and regardless of its price, an electronic device that u care for should be well cared and protected, so really it's up to you. If scratches are a-ok with u and u don't mind it, then don't bother getting one.

Screen protector and cases are cheap, even the lowest quality is good enough at least, if not at least it gives you a placebo effect. So ya, it's really up to you what YOU really want to do with it.....

i myself have a screen protector and case on it, so i feel safer carrying it around.

Also, if you wear jeans all the time or anything that has a rough texture/surface on it, chances are that it'll get scratched even if you put it inside your pocket. I know this coz i see tons of marks and scratches on the screen, but that's alright since i had a screen protector on it, but it's very obvious once you use it for a long time and u'd be amazed how many scratches there are from just putting in your pocket.
