Hi all,

Mobile 3G internet: wonderful thing to have on an internet tablet, even better with a laptop tethered by USB. I can do this with PC Suite (the latest version) in Windows 7 without a hitch - thing is, I don't really like the rest of PC Suite - unnecessary IMHO.

But I can't find a driver on the Nokia websites for the N900 USB Modem driver without PC Suite being bundled. The section that does describe using the USB connectivity of phones only applies to S60 and apparently Windows should recognise the phone and install drivers automatically.

For my N900, it doesn't. No drivers recognised automatically, when connected in PC Suite mode. Is there some magically hidden binary either on the internet or hidden on the phone that contains the USB driver required? I have scoured these forums for the answer but most of the posts are old and don't relate to the newer firmwares/versions of Nokia software.

So rather than resurrect a zombie thread from the dead, I thought I would start a new one

Any ideas anyone?

I use windows 7, without pc suite or ovi running the n900 connected in pc suite mode, my phone shows up as nokia n900 modem (ota).
the drivers came through windows update when i connected the phone for the first time,
In my program manager I also found,
nokia connectivity cable driver and nokia pc connectivity solution possibly from old pc suite install. but it connects no problen without ovi or pc suit running.
cheers

can you not use mobile hotspot or Joikuspot or does it have to be via USB?

Interesting, in mine it doesn't find any drivers - and gives me the usual device not installed error. I notice that the Flasher 3.5 comes with a Cable Connectivity Driver - is this the right driver also? I am at work at the moment so can't really check until later today

install Nokia PC Suite

Connect to internet a few times

Uninstall the suite

that should leave the drivers on windows 7 but remove the rest

plugging it in after that will allow it to recognise the n900

I guess I could use those, but there are some disadvantages to the likes of Joikuspot - mainly that (a) it costs money and (b) when mobile broadband is needed, you tend not to be able to charge the phone - and the USB connection has the advantage of charging whilst you surf

Good suggestions though!

Frappacino - nice idea about uninstalling - thats what I used to do but I have just done a clean install of Windows and would rather not go installing just to uninstall again. Could use this as a last resort though

NB of course, that I haven't yet tried the drivers installed with the flasher - which is much less invasive than the whole PC Suite.

To Cazzjay,
"and the USB connection has the advantage of charging whilst you surf
"

I use N900 as a USB modem without PC suite as PC suite no longer connects since I upgraded to PR1.3 - works a charm.

I suppose you need ovi suite or you have to have nokia drivers already installed in a way or another before plugging the usb
