Hi all, I am wondering if anyone knows how to uninstall or reinstall modest as I am have grave problems with Nokia Messaging at the moment as it doesnt seem to want to log int to Nokia Messaging and give me Push email, instead its collecting data from the Hotmail servers and using them settings instead.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thank you

Found this un-noticed thread and wish to second the motion (in spirit),
but it is probably not desirable or even really necessary
to actually remove the modest package.
There may be repercussions elsewhere if it is removed.
(The correct term might be surgical exorcism, I suppose,
as uninstalling refers to reversing an installation.)
On the other hand it might free up quite a chunk of silicon?

Since this is part of the proprietary bit fiddling with it seems
like a risk left until I get a backup unit to play with.
Tomorrow, I hope.

Just never using modest works well enough for me.
Just make sure every setting in the package is disabled
and unusable so it never wakes up.

And a final thought:
the new PR 1.3 is coming, it might be worth it to just wait
and see if there is an order-of-magnitude improvement
before rushing into other problems.

(I use the claws package which is light-years ahead of modest)

It's not easy to uninstall the built-in apps, but the problem the OP was having is likely more to do with settings rather than the app itself, so uninstalling/reinstalling it probably wouldn't fix the problem anyway.

Can't you just do "apt-get remove modest" or "apt-get purge modest"? Or dpkg -r/-P modest?

Modest, I suspect, doesn't need to be uninstalled, but I'm all for people having the ability to remove the programs preinstalled on their device.

I've been contemplating this myself. I wouldn't mind uninstalling Modest and replacing it with one of the mail clients available in the repos. I personally don't feel that strongly about it, but people who do may as well be given the ability.

I usually find that deleting and re-adding the email account helps.
