I installed Evince. Works fine.

But now, when I click on a pdf-file in Filemanager, evince opens, but it does not open the file I clicked. Just a blank page.

I tried to deinstall evince, then the filemanager uses again the original pdf-viewer. Installed evince back again, and it is broken again.

Any ideas?

Let's say you don't use File Manager, but just try to open the file directly with Evince? Or if after you get the blank page, can you then do File Open and get the file that way? They work for me.

Yep, directly from Evince's open panel it works to open the pdf.

Just the filemanager does not open it correctly.

Same if trying to open a pdf from a web page. Again, if it is saved and opened from within Evince, it's fine.

Hmmm...same here.
I don't mind Evince "taking over" but I would like it to display the PDF!
Looks to me like the filename isn't being passed to Evince when it launches.

Does anybody know how the filemanager, webbrowser etc. know which application to open for a specified mime-type or file extension?

I'm quite sure this is a mime-thing and probably evince didn't register himself correctly.

It's kind of nice that some apps install themselves as default for opening files, but it would be even nicer if there were some easy way for users to have a say.. for example, it's fine with me that Quiver took over the photos, but I would like to leave the original PDF viewer for PDF files for now. Still want to keep evince installed though.

(I should add that obviously on my N800 Evince managed to install the "takeover" setting, for some reason I don't observe the OP's reported problem and thus I can't help with that.)

I would like to know how to make pdf-reader the default opener, while still having evince installed. Does anyone know how to get about this?

Since evince managed to take over, so to speak, the answer must be in the evince deb. I'll see if I can get hold of it later and take a look ...
