First of all, i know it is closed source, to fullfill this request i imagine it would require either managing to get them to share the code with you (under a NDA contract or somthing), or create a clone from scratch.
The vOICe (the weird capitalization is how they do it, to sneek "Oh I See" in the name), is a program that converts a live image (from a camera and optionally from the screen itself) into a sound that you can learn to interpret as an image; they claim to use a special formula takng in consideration the workings of the ear and how the brain interprets auditory signals to make the resut somewhat easier to interpret. It has been used by blind people quite successfully, though sighted people can learn how to "see with sound" as well. A way to describe the effect is it's an artificially induced synestesia, the brain learns to remap some of the auditory pathways to lead to the vision area, some people that got the hang of it claim they can actually see the image on the sound; i myself have only played with it a little bit on my desktop machine, i've started to be able to recognize a few patterns, lines and shapes.
They got a Windows version, a Symbian version, an Android version, and a J2ME version (that doesn't work with that J2Me "emulator" avaiable for the N900), but no Linux version, much less a Maemo one.
I would appreciate if soeone managed to provide a version made with the N900 in mind free of charge with at least the same capabilities as the "Learning Edition" version for Windows.
