nokia E series has full disk encryption. n900 does not. there might be some apps in the repo to help, but out of the box n900 has weak security.
you could try just using web mail and skype for all comms, that would be pretty secure.

N900 has weak security overall.
You can improve it by using extra tools: truecrypt, smscon.
Encrypting data has its risks too. (Plausible deniability)
