Know something? When I first came onto this forum, before I even knew I was going to get an N900, I read up on stuff here for days, educating myself on things like chroots, basic command line tools, etc. When I got an N900 and made an account, I asked some technical questions and I was for sure a newb, but before even my first post I got the basic concept of "tech savvy people who aren't paid to coddle your every technical difficulty will not want to help you if you show no effort to learn on your own".

Now, over the course of last night and tonight, I managed to dig up .deb packages in the repositories on here to install the entire make and gcc combo. gcc, cpp, and their dependencies, in other words. I did this on my own, using knowledge that could be found on this forum.

Before a couple days ago, I didn't seriously think I could pull it of. Two months ago, I didn't seriously think I could compile for the N900 either, or get metasploit framework running on my N900, or write anything actually good/useful in python. A few days before the compiling part, I didn't believe I could install scratchbox in my virtual machines on my laptop, and a month or two before that, I wasn't even comfortable with installing a virtual machine, and a month before that, I was doing very basic command-line work in x-term.

Through all this, I rambled on the forums, discussed matters that at times I had a logically deduced understanding of, but which I understood in layman's terms, not knew the technical details of. I did ask a few stupid questions, and at times I did just outright as "how do I do _____", where _____ was something I could figure out on my own with enough research.

But mostly, I got to where I am by learning and contemplation, largely without having to ask, and the things I did ask about were always things I was either genuinely hitting blanks in known-to-me-information on, or figured would be far more efficiently answered by quickly asking someone than prodding at it with documentation reading and trial-and-error.

So what do you need an SDK on your N900 for? I know I installed gcc on here just now because, well, why the frak not? I might have access to source code and spare time and my N900, but not to a computer with a compiler, stuff like that. But I didn't actually decide it was worth it to install a compiler on my N900 until I actually got to the point where I could say I would realistically be able to actually use the tool.

Now, I understand that sometimes having a tool installed on a device is the motivation in itself to learn how to use it. That's true for me regarding NMap and Aircrack-NG, for instance, and, for that matter, X-Terminal/shell/command-line-tool use in general. But if you're not capable of doing a search on this forum for the same thing, or, if you have searched, of wording your problems accurately/precisely in getting it working, I don't expect that to be the case.

That said, here's some links to threads on the subject. If you have specific questions, ask, but don't just expect people to spoon-feed you an entire tutorial on how to do something so involved as setting up an SDK on-device:

http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=60360

But I strongly recommend using the wiki to first learn how to work with the SDK from within a desktop linux environment, then take it onto the N900 itself when you feel confident.
