I haven't written here since months and I was "a little" bit mistrustful, that Nokia will be very Open Source friendly (it was connected mainly with their lack of help for Series 40 devices for Linux, but also because of lack of official MMS support for N900 and lack of aggressive advertisements related to it).

Now after "black Friday" I have question - there are so many angry people and developers with knowledge here. Have you tried porting Maemo/Meego for example for Samsung devices ? This manufacturer seems to be quite opened for example with kernel drivers. Maybe it would be possible to make full working ports for Maemo or rather Meego for example for Galaxy S ?

Just cause Samsung has the power to pump out the most number of Android devices that does not make them open.

Meego is open for anyone to try so maybe any OEM and try Meego and slap it on some slick hardware.Im not so sure the same can be said for Maemo.

Im sure whenever Nokia plans to release the Meego phone it will be worth what the N900 is today.

I haven't suggested, that Samsung is "totally open" or something like this. And I think, that Nokia showed clear, what will be their strategy.

I will repeat my questions - have somebody tried to porting Maemo/Meego to these devices ? Is Samsung released code enough for it ?

I dont think anyone has so far tried porting Meego to Samsung devices although i think technically it is possible to work with Samsung hardware.

There have been cases where Meego has been ported to the HD2 & Nexus One so i assume that its possible on the Galaxy S too...

This thread (below) links to the only ports I've seen references to.
http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=69994

Edit: It includes both hummingbird and snapdragon ports.
Sadly, it doesn't sound like any of them are really very usable.
I had the same hopes... get some modern hardware and throw MeeGo on it for a replacement for my dying phone and N800.

Sucks that there weren't any MeeGo devices announced at MWC.
Sounds like Aava may be the first, but who knows when?

You are talking about Maemo/MeeGo ported to other devices and we still have not got Maemo in any way perfected and obviously un-portable let alone meeGo on the N900 lol.

Not sure where you saw the word "perfected"... the OP queried about "full working ports" - both terms are open to opinion as to their definition.

For example: I've read a lot of people complaining in the past about 2008HE on the N800, but I happen to think it's phenomenal (and still use mine every day). I've yet to see any phone I'd consider to be "perfected". My Blackberry 8900 Curve work phone is a total POS in comparison to my N800 - seriously. The BB crashes about 10x more often, the UI could not suck more, and... I'll just stop there to avoid hijacking the thread (please no BB vs. Maemo debates here).

My interpretation of the OP's question was "all the critical features work", which, from the ports I've seen, they don't. On one, the display doesn't work, on another, the touchscreen doesn't, I'm not sure if the phone functions on any of them. Hence, the tone of my reply.

Contrast that with 2008HE, where every function of the device works (albeit with some limitations, like the camera issues that require you use a non-stock camera app).

Personally, I'd be thrilled to find a beta-quality port of MeeGo or Maemo on any modern device (with all of the critical features functioning).

Also, keep in mind that MeeGo is being worked on (still) by other companies, where Maemo has always been a Nokia-only project (I'm talking commercial efforts here, not free donations of time and effort by the community).

I'll leave it up to the OP to clarify his/her query.
