Having seen these comments on the mBarcode thread by Lardman

"That's not really what mBarcode does - mBarcode allows you to scan a barcode and use the data it contains, those apps simply store an image of the barcode on your loyalty card and allow you to scan the image on your screen at the shop rather than needing the card.

You could do this by just taking a picture of the barcode and scanning the right one as displayed by the Images application. Certainly it might be a useful app (though I only have one card that has a barcode, for Tesco, all the others have magnetic strips), but afaict it's not something mBarcode can help you with. Sorry.

What would be cool though, would be to use the location services to know which shop you're in and automagically present the right barcode image"

I wonder if anybody else as managed to get either the Tesco clubcard to work via taking a picture, I have tried before but that failed to work, or is able to port the app to Meamo as most other phone os now seem to have this app.

Just thought it would be cool to flash my N900 under the clubcard reader rather than search for the actual clubcard in my wallet!

How many shops use barcodes on their loyalty cards?

I was being serious when I said that it would be cool for the app to know which barcode it needs to present depending on your location (and it searching for the shop that should be there)

Neat idea, don't we have a library that can generate a clean barcode from a scanned one? For instance, you use mbarcode to scan a barcode, then you can export a generated .jpg or .png file of a computer generated version. So the picture is as good quality as it can possibly be?

I tried the offical app when the symbian version came out with a N97, and a 5230, and in both cases all of the tills I visited would not read the barcode.

The staff suggested that others had also tried , and it had not worked for anyone.

Would be useful though, as I always have my phone, and never remember to pick up the clubcard.

I can't ever see that being ported to the N900, but perhaps we will get it on the N9 one day.

I thought barcode readers didn't work with LCD screens?

please, for your own sakes, you may think you're being cool and saving time, your doing the opposite, even if they did work you WILL look likd a complete pillock to everyone in sight. and they dont work so you spend ages holding people up and look like twice as much of a pillock, even the disembodied voice of the self-service machine will laugh at you. people will ezpect you to have a segway chained to the bikerack outside. just dont do it.

I agree it'll look stupid at mo but probably a good idea to get something like this running. I was in Paris last year and tried to book tickets for the Eifel Tower online using my N900. Their system uses a downloaded barcode jpeg to your phone which you flash at a scanner in the pre booked queue (waiting time about 10mins as opposed to an hour or two in the turn up queue). The system seemed to work with iphones mainly but I wasn't sure re N900 screen and as no printer I had to queue. However if this system becomes more common....... Obviously if the N900 screen not able to do this effectively then it'll be distinct shame - I really don't want an iphone!

this kind of thing has waned in and out of favour in a few markets for a few different purposes, ticket booking, hotel rooms in japan too i recall, all barcodes are are a series of numbers in machine scanable form, and anyone promoting the technology for "important" purposes such as this will allow for these numbers to be input manually should scanning fail for any reason, just like if your cornflakes dont scan in tesco the cashier can take two seconds longer and manually input the number. however if you feel the need to be prepared then by all means insist on scanning your phone at the checkout til it works! :P
