Is there a way to disable those emails and sms that keep staying open in new windows after reception?
That makes it difficult to access the main menu and annoying in general.

Hi,

This preview window is configurable:
http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p=755877&postcount=4

And you can hide the window just look at the config entry for
flash sms (class0)

regards
Nicolai

Well

HTML Code:
[sms-message-class-0]
No-Window=false
LED-Pattern=PatternCommunicationSMS
didn't help. Originally No-Window is set to true.

you have to set the option in the
[sms-message]
section. The class0 section is where you can
look which option to set, as class0 message
doesn't show a window.
(No-Window=True)

Argh, ok, now I got it.
Thanks, mate.

For those having troubles deciphering nicolai 's message -
to disable popup windows, open /etc/hildon-desktop/notification-groups.conf . Then add a
HTML Code:
No-Window=true
to sms and email sections.
The full config will be:

HTML Code:
[email-message]
Destination=Modest
Icon=general_email
Text-Domain=maemo-af-desktop
Account-Hint=email-account
Account-Call=com.nokia.modest /com/nokia/modest com.nokia.modest OpenAccount
D-Bus-Call=com.nokia.modest /com/nokia/modest com.nokia.modest top_application
LED-Pattern=PatternCommunicationEmail
No-Window=true
and

HTML Code:
[sms-message]
Destination=Rtcom-messaging-ui
Icon=tasklaunch_sms_chat
Title-Text-Empty=tana_fi_unknown_number
Text-Domain=maemo-af-desktop
LED-Pattern=PatternCommunicationSMS
D-Bus-Call=org.freedesktop.Telepathy.Client.NotificationUI /org/freedesktop/Telepathy/Client/NotificationUI com.nokia.RtcomNotificationUi GroupedMessageInvoked;default
Split-In-Threads=message-thread
Group=_grouped_messages
No-Window=true

If you reboot, some of the recent popup windows (usually e-mail) will still appear in the background. Seems like the setup is read well after initialising e-mail.
Anyway, the setup works afterwards.

From Nicolai's post http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p=755877&postcount=4 it seems that you can have the contents of the pop-in window read as "SMS". My question is - will the senders name / number still show in the pop-in window?

If yes, is there a way to hide the sender's name / number too? Rather than disabling the notification completely, I'd want it to read only as "SMS" without the sender's id.

does this disable the flashing task button? While I agree the notification windows can be annoying, I would still like to know if there is some event that I shoudl be aware of, the flashing task button was always a good subtle indicater for this.

Sorry man, can't help here. My intention was to disable this idiotic notifications once and for all. callnotify does the rest.
What I miss is the homoPhone like numbers over sms/email/calls icons on the desktop.

Surely it does disable that. The setup prevents windows from appering. And the menu icon flashes only if there's an open background window.

Just checked - the real popup notification (on yellow backround in the top of the screen, which "hides" into the menu button) is also gone. Not a big deal, but I would like to keep that.

Years later, I found that having this enabled, you'll sometimes get "message-1" alternating icon in the taskbar, and an annoying buzzing reminder tone, without any option to cancel it. You have to reboot.

UPD. I guess it was early to blame Hildon. The message and number unresetable alert is probably caused by call-notify.
