I know there must be an answer for this but I can't spend my time providing it!

Do a complete reflash, follow the instructions in the Wiki.
eMMC first, don't reboot, then rootfs.
For some reason, flasher seems to be hit and miss with flashing rootfs. Odd, you'll have to try quite a few times.

Leave the phone on. It has been known for it to take 20 minutes on the 'white dots screen' on first boot. This is because it is optifying apparently.
I reflashed my N900 using the maemo flasher and it now shows the Nokia logo folowed by dim screen with the orange led pulsing twice then the siz dots just stay on and NOTHING happens?!
Please help me I need to fix this :S
Well Nokia do at least know how to build a decent phone, just apparently don't know how to support it..
