I have a t-mobile data plan on my N900 that's supposed to be unlimited.

I noticed reduced data speed since last night. And this morning I found a message from t-mobile saying "You have used over 5GB of data this month. Your data speed has been reduced for the rest of your billing cycle per the terms of your data plan".

I searched around and found these links, that say t-mobile has indeed started throttling data speeds.

Internet on my smart phone is not really important to me. What's really important to me is unlimited mobile internet that I can use with my laptop. What are the options that I have?

One of the reasons I got a phone without a contract is so I can terminate a plan whenever I wanted. So I'm ready to sell my phone, terminate the plan, and get a new phone with just a voice and text plan. It depends on the choices I have, like are there any services, from t-mobile or any other company, that give unlimited mobile internet for a reasonable price. Does anyone know of any?

You're in which country? Kinda makes a difference to the contracts/tariffs you can get... Not quite obvious even after clicking on one of the links, but I think you're in the US?

Just out of curiosity, how did you use 5 gigs on your phone?

I don't think there is a truly unlimited data plan in the US for what I consider a reasonable price.

Very important to make sure you read the small print on any contract and if in any doubt whatsoever to contact customer support BEFORE taking out a contract, beware of anything they say that is not in the smallprint.

I tethered the phone, and used it for everything like watching Youtube videos and downloading torrents.

How useful this data-plan would be reduced because of the 5GB cap. But it's not that bad.

I don't need intenet on a smartphone that I can carry in my pocket. If I have mobile internet for my laptop, with a cap of like 10 or 15GB, and good speeds that is more than enough.

I think I pay $30 for the data plan. I couldn't find anything cheaper than that, yet, that fits my requirements. I'm still searching.

If you have been with T-Mobile for more than 2 years, you can ask for a cheaper plan e.g. 20 Dollars for the smart phone plan. (5 G limit too)

$10 data plan (grand father unlimited web plan) is exists but wont get you the speed as fast as the $20.

So you are correct, 5 GB would be the limit before tmobile throttle it down.

For 10 GB or 15GB, maybe check clearwire or get another tmobile sim card :P

The only catch is make sure you are on their 4G (unlimited), if you romaing to 3G then there is a limit. (2GB if not mistaken).

Since you are using > 5 GB, cant u use your own ISP at home ? and only use tmobile when u are outside ?

Thanks for this info. I'll look in to it.

I don't have another ISP. I just use this data plan. I live for rent, so I can't get one either. I'm a grad student, so don't get paid very well, so I get the cheapest rent I can find. High speed internet is not really a priority when looking for a place. I expect to be moving quite often in the next 3 or 4 years. So I'd rather stick with one mobile data plan.
