have you tried to connect to your accesspoint with another device?
Is your wlan0 device still available on N900? check it in Terminal.. you need rootsh installed, then type
root
ifconfig -a

nope! i havent used any wifi app till today...i keep my device simple...i dont experiment with it installing whole lot of app from the app manager...

however, it keeps giving me lot of trouble...it has starting to slow now...freezes frequently...i have to reboot quite often..n m sick of it...

anyways! if the wifi problem is solved, it is still my best phone i ever had....

First: try another Wifi device first as another poster suggested.

Never forget to make a backup on your N900 before
installing a new software.

There are always different ways to get software onto your
N900:
connect N900 via USB cable to your desktop or laptop machine and copy the file to the partition that you like
or
set up bluetooth and transfer the file via bluetooth.

If you used USB cable do a disconnect of the hardware in the
tray if using Windows or unmount the device if using Linux,
then unplug the USB cable.

If you used bluetooth switch off bluetooth on the N900.

Then use the file manager and go to the place where you saved the software, selecting the *.deb should try to install it.

I guess you did enter the commands as root in the x-term
application?
;-)
What does the output show?
What does the command:
ifconfig | grep phone
tell you?

Can you post a snapshot?
