This post (which inadvertantly appears to be a reply in an unrelated thread rather than a new thread!) just appeared on the Maemo developers mailing list:

Launch of Mobile and Internet Linux Project (moblin.org)

We are happy to announce the launch of the Mobile & Internet Linux
Project on http://moblin.org . Moblin.org is an umbrella open source
project focused on the development of Linux for Intel-based devices.
Moblin.org will also be an incubator for prototyping new ideas and
building a community of developers around them. Currently, Moblin.org
hosts a number of projects including an image creator, a UI framework, a
power policy manager and various non-PC oriented applications and
software components. The work so far has been focused on Intel based
devices but is open to contributions for support of other architectures.

We share a lot with the Maemo community as we are built on GNOME Mobile
components, use the Hildon Application Framework, and share many of the
same UI design goals for hand-held mobile devices. We look forward to
synergy between the two communities.

I'm assuming this is to do with the Intel MID platform.

More details of what will be developed at Moblin here.

Interesting to note that the Moblin browser will be Mozilla based, which could mean full-blown Firefox or Minimo. Hopefully it will be the latter and Intels invovement will accelerate the development of Minimo for other platforms.

I'm not sure what's being said in the Power Management and Network Profile sections, but hopefully it goes some way to addressing enhancement #1046 which Nokia don't seem terribly interested in (judging by lack of any comment).

Interesting paragraph from here:

Hildon Application Framework
The Hildon Application Framework is the same set of GTK-based classes that Nokia used with Maemo and is the basis for the Nokia N-level devices such as, N700 [sic!], N800, etc. The UI-related elements of the framework take into consideration user interaction with a hand-held tablet device with either a finger or stylus, and encourage a consistent look-and-feel for applications. The version of Hildon used for the MID UI is bleeding edge (pre-4.0, that is, v0.0.18 of "Consolidated Hildon Framework"), available from svn with some small additions. Hildon will be released as a separate independent-from-Maemo GNOME open source project later this year, and may be included in the GNOME-Mobile core services (see Lucas Rocha's blog). Changes to Hildon, made for MID UI Framework, are intended to be moved upstream and become part of Hildon.
Sounds good to me.

I can't help but think that more sharks in the water will be good for internet tablets in general. Nothing like competition to light a fire under one's posterior.

It's not only the competition that's good. Don't forget that Intel's improvements to the components Maemo is built upon (like Hildon) will most likely be seen 1:1 in upcoming IT firmware releases. Not today, not next month, but in the long run.

See the magic of free software at work.
