Hi.

Im wondering if already exist an app for Maemo/Meego that make possible to send IM between two or more smartphone via bluetooth like a chat.

Can be usefull for example on a train or in a classroom (even if dangerous XD ) if you want to chitchat with somebody without spending money for normal SMS.

i know some people is doing this in a tricky way, saving the message as a contact and then sending the contact via bluetooth

Is there an app already or some Work In Progress?

something like this: http://developer.android.com/resourc...hat/index.html

what about the possibility of communicating with different devices like symbian, android, etc? difficulties?

it would definitely be possible to link up n900's through bluetooth, i guess there's just nothing really implementing it for what you want right now, but it is possible to do it, either through bluetooth or ad-hoc wifi

It's a (high school) project I started and never finished, I even had a page about the concept but the domain expired and I cba to renew it really.

https://gitorious.org/bt-messenger/bt-messenger

No debs available right now.
It uses a mesh of devices, so there shouldn't be any limits on distance or number of devices.

Needs Qt Mobility 1.2, the UI changed a bit, it's not very stable.

Of course it could be done even on wi-fi ad-hoc network

There is a homebrew which does this on PSP(Portable playstation) using Wi-Fi

I used to have bt-chat in S60-devices, but noone else were using it.

Nokia had this app, which also worked like remote ID card scanning neighborhood for people with similar interests. Great idea, but once again it stayed in Nokia beta-labs and never was marketed. I do not remember the name of the system.
