Anyone know of a way to edit (or create) virtual keyboard layouts on the N900 (e.g. the special one you get if you press "blue arrow" then "sym" in a terminal window)

Do you mean the content of that pop-up window?

At the end of /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/nokia_vndr/rx-51 is a function "key <LCTL>". This seems to be the bit that builds that window. Where this gets the information from to generate that pop-up ... mmm! Closed binary?

... anybody else?

Nope, how the symbols page is triggered I already know, what I want to know is where the keyboard layout data for that page comes from and how to edit it.

Install app called "Keyboard Mod." It can change the Sym layout.
