He doesn't need to do that; most probably his /etc/mce/mce.ini file has something screwed.
OP, get a fresh one from my db: http://db.tt/kc2XzrD3
after replacing the file either reboot your device or restart the mce service and most probably it should work fine now

Why just not to go to Setting -> Device -> Display -> change display time-out to another one -> save -> change display time-out back -> save.
It always work for me...
If I remember right, this problem happens sometimes after applying "Blanking off" or "Disable automatic brightness" don't remember which one

I'm new here, so first I would like to say that I love what I've seen from this community so far. I have a N9 for a few weeks now and I'm glad its ecosystem is so open and easy to use.
Well, I'm here now because after tinkering with the thingy for a few days, changing stuffs with command lines and community tools, even though I'm happy with what I've come with I have a small issue that I can't seem to find the source of. It is thus:
When I stop using the n9 and put it aside without pushing the lockscreen button, I would assume it should go to the standby screen (screen saver is set on "on" so...), but this is not the case. I have to manually lock the screen otherwise the light fade a little after 15 secs and then stays as is... hence sucking my battery !
I know, I know, I'm the one to blame cause I certainly broke something while playing with the phone, but I did so many tweaks in the past few days that I can't find the source ^^
So if a kind soul would like to help me find a cure for this sad misfortune, I'd be gald to send him my best regards
