After a month, I am still struggling to figure out how to set up my Gmail. I am half way there as I can send messages successfully, but still cannot receive. I followed a fellow forum subscriber's instruction as shown below...

E-mail address: self explanatory
Incoming server (pop3): pop.gmail.com
Outgoing server (SMTP): smtp.gmail.com
use connection-specific smtp servers: check

then hit configure under smtp servers and hit edit

Server name: smtp.gmail.com
Smtp authentication: login
Username: email address
PAssword: your password
security: SSL
outgoing email port: 465

then hit ok and then close
then you should get a message saying account set up is complete, hit advanced and under retrieval

Retrieve: headers only
leave email on server: check
email sixe limit: 1000
Password authentication: normal
Security: SSL (pop3s)

under sending
Smtp authentication: login
username and then password: the usual
Security: SSL
outgoing email port: 465

under the composing tab you really dont need to do anything

under security, just check the last two options leave everything blank

I rechecked my password to ensure they are correct, and I am thinking anyone looking at this forum should be able to pinpoint what my problem might be. Thank you for your time, and please let me know what I am doing wrong. Some suggested using 995 as email port, but this did not work

Here's what works for me. This assumes you've setup pop3 on your gmail account.

Account name: gmail
Account type: POP3
Name: your name i.e. Joe
User name: your gmail username i.e. banditrider
Password: your gmail password
E-mail address: your full email address i.e. banditrider@gmail.com
Incoming server(POP3): pop.gmail.com
Outgoing server(SMTP): smtp.gmail.com
Use connection specific SMTP servers: Un-checked

Advanced
Retrieval tab
Retrieve: Headers only
Leave email on server: Checked
Email size limit (kb): 1000
Password authentication: Normal
Security: SSL (POP3S)
Incoming e-mail port: 995 (you need to scroll down to see this)

Sending tab
SMTP authentication: Login
Username: full email address i.e. banditrider@gmail.com
Password: gmail password
Security: Normal (TLS)
Outgoing e-mail port: 587

Compositing tab
Default e-mail format: Formatted text (HTML)
Send email: Immediately
Include original in reply: Checked
Request read report: Un-checked

Security tab
Only the last two items are checked

Again, If you haven't set your account to pop3 at gmail.com, you won't be able to read mail.

Okay, I tried the new setting and for some reason it was not allowing me to "send or receive" email. Therefore, I reverted it back to the original settings described on my original post, so I could at least send it.

All replied emails are received on my PC gmail account, but not on my 770.

I keep thinking my incoming email port is the problem. Should I change this to 995, with everything else set up like the original post? If there are others who could kindly check their settings and let me know, it would be greatly appreciated.

Are you sure your gmail account is set-up for pop3?

I think I am correctly set up for POP3... But, how can I make sure I've set it up correctly?

When I first got 770, the gmail set up process would not allow me to finish, so I had to go to my PC and set up my account. Perhaps this is where I did it wrong? My gmail account works fine on my PC (both send and receive).

Should I open new account? I hate to have two separate gmail addresses (for 770 and PC) though. Thank you for your time.

When you say it works on your PC, do you mean with a web browser or an email client like Thunderbird?

On the web, I go to Google email site (mail.google.com). I sign in with the same user name and password that I use for gmail account on 770. From here, I can send or receive using my gmail account with my @gmail.com address. I actually love this email application, and it would be wonderful if it works on 770. Thanks.

Go to the Gmail webpage with your PC and log-in.
In the upper right-hand corner click on Settings.
On the Settings page, click on Forwarding and POP.
Next to POP Download 1. Status: Does it say POP is enabled?

If not, Check Enable POP only for mail that arrives from now on.
Select an option for #2 (I keep Gmail's copy in the Inbox)
Then click Save Changes.

There's a link in #3 that shows how to configure most email clients (I use Thunderbird 1.5)

Okay, I went to my PC, and followed your instruction to find out my POP was not enabled which was corrected immediately. Before changing #3 (configure email client) to Outlook which I use, I sent a test message to Gmail. My PC received it, but again, my 770 kept saying "Authentication to pop.gmail.com failed...."

The reason I did not configure my email client is that it is not my intention to "forward" my messages to 770. I am just trying to use gmail account to receive mail directly from anyone sending it to my gmail address. Thus, if I have no problem getting my gmail messages on Google mail site, I am thinking there is no need to configure email client. Am I correct? I keep thinking it's my 770 that is not set up correctly... Thank you for your help!

Err, you can enable email notifications in your profile page.
