Does sound like it could be the ribbon cable.
There is no power to the backlight when open but the screen is still on?

Yes. The display and touchscreen work when opened. Just no backlight but you can distinguish what'son the screen.
I've been using my N900 for 3 years.
I have a problem with my screen: it goes black when I open it (or more precisely very, very dark).
The screen and backlight work perfectely when closed.
I re-flashed it to check for software problem: no change.
The problem also appears when I just power on the device.
I left my phone fall down and the problem appeared one week after...
What is the cause ? Can it be the ribbon or another mechanism ?
