I use DVD catalyst to convert both DVD and downloads for my Nokia 770.

I'm not sure I'm getting the best, most crisp picture quality.

The video in the preinstalled clip seems better as do pictures. It seems video on the IPOD or Itouch (with nearly the same screen size) looks better.

I use the settings recommended for the 770 but there is some lack of clarity at times.
I've tried fiddling with the video quality slider and used different settings in the screen size area but all attempts with files that come up as not supported by the 770.

Any suggestions?

Hi, tell us:
1. are you using media converter?
2. what settings on media converter? I use Optimize, 400x... and then watch it using mplayer.
I am pretty new myself to converting FOR 770. I always run the video through media converter before I try to watch. So I decrypt the video (which I own) and then use AutoGK. Then media converter. I get pretty good quality, but can't watch using the preinstalled video player because the video is 400x (240? I think).
Media converter can do a good job without having to figure out the best settings or fps, etc.

Search under media converter or convert video. there are a lot of good posts already which can help you.

Use Media Converter ( https://garage.maemo.org/frs/?group_id=26 ). You need mplayer to play the videos.

I have been using Handbrake for ripping DVDs (on a iMac though I believe there is a version for PCs). It is free. The files converted have been played with video player as they haven't played on mplayer. If converting tv shows, you can batch them on Handbrake as it does them one at a time.

Personally, I wouldn't use media converter for this application as it doesn't rip from DVDs and I am against in principal spending more time converting content than actually watching it.

DVD Ripping and Video Conversion software (on Mac): Handbrake (free)
Horizontal Resolution: 352
Video Bitrate: 448
Audio Bitrate: 128
Single Pass (though 2 pass worked as well)
FPS: 15

This is based somewhat on what I have seen in the forums and a lot of iterations in getting something to work.

For me, the video quality is perfectly acceptable. This probably could be optimized more, but I got tired doing it myself and settled once the result was satisfactory. Again, these videos would not run on mplayer but they do run on the built in video player.

Also, I should note that the video file size does not appear to change that much regardless of what settings are selected (e.g. FPS or video bitrate).

Hi, I will have to try Handbrake. The question I have is:
How fast is Handbreak compared to DVD decrptor and Autogk?
Both DVD Decrypt and Media Coder are really fast, so I don't mind using them. Auto GK is what takes the longest. I run it when I go to bed, and it turns off my PC when its done. It can do subtitles and a lot of other features, such as specifying exactly how big u want the file to be. Its nice, but I have to try handbreak too.
I don't mind running both programs (or 3 with media converter), so I am not too motivated to try to find a 1 step program. I have found Media converter works really well and very fast. So any avi I have, I can put on my 770 with it and it looks good. Sometimes solid blacks show lower quality, but I am choosing to have a small file and run at 770 optimized.

I just got my IOgear USB to RS-MMC card reader. Very cheap. $10.99 plus tax+ship from DELL. This should be a MUST for anyone who watches video on 770 because transfer rate to 770 from PC is SOooo slow. I am hoping this is MUCH faster at USB 2.0 to move a movie to my 770.

I am not too familiar with other applications - I was looking for a 1 step solution. I think a 45 minute show takes around 10-15 minutes to convert resulting in a 150mb - 200mb file. I thought the files would come out smaller but I can live with this.

If you do try Handbrake and you find better settings than I am suggesting, please let me know.
