Can some one tell me please, how the light turns off when I close the 770 with the cover? I see that the light turns off when I put the cover of my 770 and then it's on when I take the cover off, but I didn't find how it's done. I mean the cover does not press any button or something.

Nah. It's one of them fridge gnomes. Nokia managed to breed them really small, so they fit in the 770. It peaks out through a one-way window and when it sees the cover coming on, it flips a mangetic switch to shut down the light.

Occasionally though, there's the odd one that gets a growth sprout. You can tell because the gnome lives at the bottom of the 770, between the headphone and the usb jackets, and when it gets too big, a crack will appear.

Take the cover completely off the device. Then put a paper clip inside the cover, to the spot which is on top of the menu key when the cover is closed. Turn the cover over and see how the clip hangs there, by MAGIC.

(...or magnetism, as my elementary school science teacher would have called that)

EDIT: There's also a magnet inside the battery cover. You can hold it over the menu key to see the screen blanking. However, opening the cover may shut the device down, which is the magnet's purpose. But my 770 seems to do this only rarely.

I also put a little magnet in front of the menu key and the light went off.

What about the gnomes?

Nevermind them, I'm still boggling myself over those "mangetic" switches.

Mangetic switches are similar to Mingetic switches only they don't try to rule the universe.

Now, back to the gnomes - what the heck do they eat? From the sound of this thread, it's someting to do with paperclips.

It's rather gross, but nevertheless...

They feed on shedded epitheles that rub off when you use the D-pad, or why did you think the D-pad has such a shoddy fit? Also, at night they skim the screen for fatty residues.

Bet that took your appetite away, huh?

And there was I thinking that they were fed by the constant stream on nibble pibblies (who were in turn attracted by the great mangetics....).
