I'm having problems with the media streamer app...it keeps freezing/crashing on me regularly.

Here's my setup;
  • upnp server is a HP mv2010 NAS, upgraded to 2x500Gbs drives (mirrored) with Twonkymedia 4.4 installed. The music library currently contains about 2,500 FLAC encoded songs.
  • upnp renderer (player) is a Denon 3808ci receiver.
  • upnp control point is my Nokia 770 running media streamer
  • the server and renderer are both attached to my network via ethernet
When the 770 behaves properly this is an amazing setup. Unfortunately, the application freezes or crashes constantly. I've tried everything I could think of : deleting and creating a 64mbs virtual memory on the MMC card, uninstalling all themes/unneeded apps, deleting all user files, un/re-installing media streamer...I'm out of ideas.

Appreciate any ideas/thoughts on how to get this working more reliably.

Has anyone run into issues with file names with the mediastreamer by any chance? For example, would a name like "\\MediaVault\Music\Jimmy Page & Robert Plant\No Quarter - Page & Plant Unledded\Gallow's Pole.flac" (or possibly some other special characters) be the source of my problems?

I agree that a set-up such as yours is amazing...

What other symptoms do you see immediately prior to/after the freeze?

I assume the music stops being played at end of song after media streamer freezes.

I first thought that it sounded like a network connection issue where Media streamer looses connection/control and locks up? (are you using DHCP, have you tried with manually allocated IP's for all devices?)

Then you mentioned file names and I have a vague memory of issues with some file types and naming strings?

PS, I have had similar problems when using Cidero (On PC) and Media Streamer on Nokia 770 to control playback and have not managed to pinpoint what causes the problem when it occurs.

On holiday at moment but will test when I am at home next week.

sometimes mediastreamer closes, most times it just freezes. No rhyme or reason that I can detect

it'll stop playing after the last song in the playlist

I don't use DHCP anywhere on my network, I find it causes me way more grief than it's worth.

I hope not...man oh man that'll be a royal PITA to go through all those songs one by one

haven't tried that yet, I'll give it a shot and see if has the same problems

*green with envy*

appreciate you taking the time to give this some thought. There are times I stare at a problem long enough that I miss the most obvious thing.

I've had the same issue for quite some time. I've got a PC running XP, with 130 gig of music being shared. Until I got my 770, it was shared primarily through my XBOX (not 360) which is connected to my TV (music, movies, etc play through the it). I've got a gym in the garage with an amp and some speakers. I used to use my MacBook Pro to share the music wirelessly but room in the gym is cramped enough. Enter the 770.

Media Streamer ALWAYS shuts down during an hours training - without fail - at least once. Either the app beeps and shuts down - it carries on playing the current song to the end despite not being displayed as a running app. I then just restart MS and carry on (waiting for another crash). Sometimes it will hang and nothing in Media Streamer works (minimise, file menu, etc don't respond). Usually you can get back to the home screen and even start other apps but MS won't quit. Once I managed to get it to quit by putting the screen cover back on - after a minute it beeped and asked if I wanted to shut MS down. However, I usually just power it off and start again.

My wireless connection is solid, I've not modded or installed anything too freaky on the 770, I'm technical on PCs and Macs but not linux so I'm waiting until I'm a bit further along the learning curve.

All in all, I'm stumped.....

Mantic -- that's exactly my experience too. I've found if you press the navigation buttons a bunch of times while in the frozen MS screen it may come up with the "this application is not responding..." dialogue and I can shut it down/restart it without going through the whole reboot process.

Aha! I shall try that. Annoying pain in the rear though. I find myself playing the "how many tunes can I listen to before I get that aggravatingly happy BING, indicating that MS has shut down for no apparent reason at all?" game.

It's not a fun game either.
