What is the least impact way of updating the firmware (kernel in the case of 38-2, I believe) when using an MMC root file system? I suspect that things would break badly if I did another blind tar copyfrom the on-board flash to the MMC, as I have updated many apps since the initial copy.

Or is any updating required for the latest fix? Maybe the kernel image is still on the on-board flash, so thing will work magically?

Is there a way to only update the kernel image, perhaps?

Thanks in advance for assistance.

You mean the SD card corruption fix for N800?

Yes, there are multiple ways. Search this forum for kernel flashing or SDHC corruption, it was mentioned many times. To apply this fix you really need just kernel, touching rootfs in flash or MMC is not needed.
