Actually, the firmware update *does* erase all third party apps and data.

Foolish me, I thought backup of "all applications and data on the device" meant just that. It does not. The Ovi Suite backup & restore doesn't catch third party apps, so you're s.o.l. of you don't manually backup your data from the internal file system.
