Here's a great thread on XDA of the Nexus One working with the ADK:

Fun times ensue. I can see future toys build using this -- slap on a pair of stereo-glasses and have a ball with a quadrocoptor or RC car.

You know I enjoy reading your posts, but this cannot be ignored. You're passing of speculation as fact and writing in a very assertive
way as to lead people that some of your comments are fact, when they are not.

For example:
Seriously?

How can you project future performance of battery life from a software upgrade that does not yet exist?

ChromeOS doesn't even have an ARM port. Now, it's likely that there will be one available, but what that will look like remains to be seen -- eg. verified boot or that NaCl requires virtualization, a cortex A15 capability, and a V8 port to the hardware. I also won't hold my breath that for a swift development movement on the laptop dock.

Now these things may happen, and very well likely so, but they are not guaranteed to happen, and certainly not guaranteed in the short run. They should be stated as speculation, not fact. It is misleading.

Oh, and the GSII has HDMI out as well.

As an aside:
This entire buy-based-on-potential has stung far too many people in this place, including myself. I would easily recommend the GSII over the Atrix 4G.
No offence taken buddy.

The HDMI is better on the Atrix than the GSII, in my humble opinion, because it gives you the chance to use the two ports separately. What if I want to connect a flash/hard-drive and playback the media from it to the big screen? Not possible with the GSII (iirc) because the spliter attempts to recognize the hdd as the TV. With no dongle, no software issues, its a foolproof way.

I know for sure that Ubuntu is high on the list for things to be done, if the bootloader gets unlocked/bypassed. And imagine the laptop-dock with UNR loaded on, its a mobile PC! Remember the whole Xperia family's bootloader got bypassed a month ago?? The Atrix has a bigger battery, so with proper implementation (ie custom kernel) I would expect it to surpass the GSII in terms of battery life.

So my recommendation is to stick with the Captivate. Its a great looking phone, blazing fast, and heaps of community support/third-party software. The upgrade to a GSII is more of an incremental than an outright ascension.

Once these dual-core smartphones have matured, (and competition heats up), its likely that a better option will be available ... eg HTC somethingsomething. Or perhaps an older model (eg Atrix) will get its cost reduced. And maybe, an option like the Atrix might be blessed with proper custom roms, salivating desires.

PS I thought Chrome OS is supported on both x86 and ARM platforms.

We humans are a passionate bunch. There are some who are so passionate about something – perhaps something inanimate – that it can turn into fanboyism (or fangirlism).

One such noted variety around the tech circles is the apparent love for Apple products that some consumer faithful seem to have. It may be simple fanboyism, or it may be something deeper – so deep that it's on the same level as religion.

BBC Three's Secrets of the Superbrands program took a look at Apple's rabid following, which included the massive lineups for customers who are excited to be the first into a new Apple store location. While massive queues for a new product launch are not uncommon, Apple manages to attract its legion of customers to new store openings even when there aren't any new products or special promotions.

The Bishop of Buckingham, who totes his Bible on his iPad, explained to the show the similarities between Apple and religion.
Recently,a team of neuroscientists then observed the brain of an Apple fanatic. Amazingly, Apple stimulates the same parts of the brain that respond to religion, perhaps leading to an explanation of how some people can be so loyal (and defensive) of their personal computing choice.

"HOOOHOOHAHAHAHA! POTATOES!" @.@

My issue wasn't with the quality of speculation but use of the word 'will' where 'can', 'may', or 'probably' should have been.

It seems that the Android Market movie service is being blocked from rooted devices:

http://www.androidcentral.com/google...rooted-devices

This is being met with some contempt!

Android Market FAQ:
You'll receive this "Error 49" message if you attempt to play a movie on a rooted device. Rooted devices are currently unsupported due to requirements related to copyright protection.
There you have it. Copyright protection and DRM. What say you?

That's odd. I've watched some of the freebies already on my Galaxy Tab (rooted). Do they instead mean ROM flashed? (BTW: There are freebies if you go to http://youtube.com/movies (look on the right column under Top 10 free movies) instead of http://market.android.com in case you didn't already know that)

Well, the FAQ says rooted devices, so the freebies may not be subject to this restriction.

I can't see the movies in the market as I am in Canada, and they seem to be restricted. I can only see apps.

My big question is how 'developer' devices like the Nexus S and the XOOM will fare with this. I wonder if they too will be restricted from this service.

It's nice that other options exist (like netflix, redbox, amazon VOD, etc), but it's odd that Google would force (or be forced into) this restriction. Surely some scheme can be created to protect video content from re-distribution, even if the developer had access to the compiled APK or its files. I wonder how it's done on other systems?

The Galaxy Tab 10.1 just got another stellar review from an admitted apple-fan:

http://www.ubergizmo.com/2011/05/gal...b-10-1-review/

FTA:

In conclusion, this is the first time I told myself that I could use an Android tablet instead of my iPad 2. Since Google gave-away the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 Limited Edition to all Google I/O attendees, we do not have to send back the device as we do with all the review units – I will use both the iPad 2 AND the Tab 10.1
Of course there are downsides (long charging, relatively small 'optimized' app collection, proprietary dock, etc), but the verdict is quite positive.

Most impressive... Here's hoping the 8.9 ups the ante.

It is coming out more and more that the 10.1 has the Tegra 2 in it, so I'm hoping that the 8.9 includes the Exynos. It seems to be positioned as less 'developer' focused, so here's hoping that it ships with 8.9 and the Exynos 4210.

I wish the 8.9 ups the ante, but that's only speculation blown out of proportions.

Why would you prefer the Exynos to the Tegra2 btw?
From what I've seen they both offer the same CPU (1GHz Dualcore A9) and GPU (50-80MPPS vs 71MPPS) performance. What's different is that Exynos actually is at a disadvantage because it doesn't have the (PVR, ATITC, DXT) shaders/textures implemented so there are some apps/games that crash.

And the only way for it to work is if the app developers actually rewrites their apps to support the ETC textures. Or a really gifted developer actually writes a brand new driver. It is unlikely that a firmware update will fix this unless the gpu manufacturer revises their drivers (so its not up to Samsung).

And on top of this the Tegra Zone is slowly building up titles (in HD) and these are only supported on devices with Tegra2 under the bonnet.

And from a development perspective, it would be better choosing the Tegra2 device since this processsor is shared in other devices that you can share some code ... for eg if you wanted to lets say port a Sense Rom from a HTC Tegra2phone, it would be much more difficult doing so on an Exynos device rather than a Tegra2 device.

Again, speculation is fine as long as it's not passed as fact...

I like the performance that I see exhibited on the Exynos. Particularly the GPU fill and shader performance. But I will be the first to admit that this is mainly ignorance as a comprehensive performance measurement tool is somewhat lacking, and the playing field is not even between devices as to accurately ascertain performance.

Yes, the texture format (specifically textures with an alpha channel) is an issue for developers, and Tegra has tegra-zone, but as you alluded to, one of the likely best selling devices this year, the Galaxy S II, is packing the Exynos 4210 w/ Mali400mp, and you can bet that it will have an increasing game selection as time goes on. A popular devices is a good incentive to support Mali.

I bet that the Galaxy Tab in whatever incarnation it comes in will be popular as well. Again, great incentive to 'port' your games.

I don't think that Tegra's early success is enough to write off other SoCs and their GPUs. Besides, diversity in this space is good.

By the by:
AFAIK, texture compression algorithms are one of those annoying non-standardized aspects of GPU design. GPU vendors tend to have their own intellectually-protected formats. I don't think a better driver would cut it.

ETC1 being standardized by Khronos (ES2.0) was a great move.... but they left out the alpha channel with that format, which is a boneheaded move. Since transparent textures are pretty common, this leaves vendors to choose their own formats, and low and behold, they are all different.

A smart developer can work around this in any number of ways. One way would be to use an ETC1 compressed layer that represents the alpha and blend with the original texture using a shader to provide transparency. There are memory tradeoffs with this technique, so it would be highly dependent on the amount of transparency in the scene. Of course, innovation doesn't seem to be the strong point of many, so this is likely an unrealistic expectation.
