Possible. But I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt here. Once N9 is released, maybe it will be good enough that Elop will change his mind about the future of Nokia Meego phones. I for one will be letting everyone around me know about it if it's really good even for my non-geek friends and relatives. (unlike N900 which wasn't really something I could recommend to them)
The situation with N9 is strange somewhat. On one hand someone said in this thread above, that consumer device was pushed (ditching the hw keyboard one) in order to attract "mainstream" consumers. On the other hand Meego itself is pushed to the corner as a experiment/research project, and WP7 is assigned the consumer attraction role in Nokia. So why can't N9 come out with keyboard then anyway? It'll work perfectly as an experiment. I'm pretty confused about that.

It as no customizable widgets desktop like N900, They trying to make it like a iphone, Ironic thing is iOS5 is rumoured to be getting widgets, so both are striving to be each others predecessors it seems.
If it really as no Customisable desktop like stated on MeeGo mailing list by a Nokia employee 7 months back then lets hope Nokia have a new solution or it is open enough so that the community can add something

Assuming there is indeed 2 devices (devel and consumer) how can anyone be sure which device the conversation that took place in the mailing list was about?
what would be use of one with widgets and one without, if the idea of one device is to develop and test software to run on the other.

given that it was a number of months ago and given some of the big changes that have taken place (both in strategic direction and leadership changes in the dev teams) it's possible that the "minimalist' approach discussed in that list has been dropped for a more mainstream theory.
edit: i was of the impression, given some of the speculation here, that the hardware was quite different (lower end processor and memory on the dev device). Oh well. I'm not losing sleep over it. the thread has been an entertaining read so far, and has certainly given an insight into some of our posters ( that people can get so p*ssed about a freaking mobile phone astounds me!) here at TMO.
It'll come when it comes and until then I'm having too much fun playing with Meego on my N900 and finally learning some coding skillz
along the way.Although the hwkb is important to me, I've realised that it's not the reason I can't find a replacement for my N900 on the market. It's the OS and the things that the device can do.
I think a lot of people here, making noise about "needing" a hardware keyboard should consider this; what is it about the N900 that you actully love so much? I'm sure the kb is a part of it, from a holistic perspective, but given improvements to the annoying issues and enhancements in other aspects of the UI, would it REALLY be a deal breaker if you still got the "openness" and tweakability of maemo/meego on a new device?

Although the iphone set some standards in usability ( for non techy folks), why do companies see iphone as the example in every use case I don't understand.
There are somethings in which N900 is the best by any measures: multi-tasking, widgets and notifications. They should strive to keep it that way.

man i've finished reading this entire thread over the course of this week, and im fairly unsatified right now. yea im new to this forum and i've only had my n900 abt 3 or 4 months but i really like it. i consider myself to be an average consumer, cuz i dnt develop or understand anything at it, but i want a physical keyboard... and i dnt want to buy adapters to make my headsets work either....
im jus saying a few things that might be on the minds of other average consumers...

if were so lucky, the bits that weve seen were old but that could have been a pre-alpha hw so who knows.
the thing is though, until theres something more tangible there isnt a real reason to differentiate yet. its only a matter of time, im just waiting to see if i can get the HDMI out and mSDHC slots that were missing on the aforementioned pictures, these to me are more pressing issues then wondering if we'll get more devices ... itd be a shame, if youd have to choose b.w functionality and a keyboard.
