I did read what you wrote but being a N900 owner I know only too well that the anticpated 2 years support for the OS counts for nothing if Nokia decides to move on to another OS.

This time it seems Nokia, well Elop, is being quite open with the fact that nokia will not be supporting meego in the long term. I the had been produced by Samsung or Apple I wouldn't of hesitated in buying it however I certainly will not be parting with £500/$600 of my hard earned money for a phone which may not be supported, OS wise, by Nokia in 6 months time.

So you are basically repeating what I have wrote, though in more negative tone which does not seem to be particularly inviting for discussion.

N900 software updates support was around one year (formal shipments started November 10, 2009, PR1.3 was released October 25th, 2010), then CSSU took over very nicely. I'm far from having dreams that something similar with community updates would happen for N9 however, you can't deny that it is definitely longer than 6 months time.

Going back to N9, first priority before discussing anything related to updates would be to see the actual device out in shops. Before that happens, anything could happen to updates. Launch release was first step, I sincerely hope next one would be sales release in nearest future, once summer holidays are done, and it wouldn't require famous five Vanjoki's steps to get the device out to shops.

I have my professional interest in it -- after all, 2.5 years of my professional life went into this product and being able to help people in their life not only by igniting their interest to technology by viewing videos but by giving them real tools for use is one of goals why I worked on it.

Does anyone know how the notifications system in Harmattan works? It looks like there is a general notifications screen where all new messages show up (google chat, twitter, facebook, sms, etc?). What happens when you click on one of them? Does it open the application it is associated with?

If anyone has a device, I would be interested to see how replying to something like a google chat or facebook chat message works (new window for each person you are chatting with, or a common window for everyone). I have an idea for an app, but I am struggling to understand the notifications system, and how it compares to maemo5.

imo your boss should have bought the HTC Desire Z or maybe the Milestone 2(Droid 2) instead

Based on the announcement that time from launch to shipment will be short in future and the X7 and E6 now shipping in June while being announced in April, this lets me hope that N9 will be on sale from August. The earlier, the better.

However, taking into account the statement from Elop in the "Windows Phone leak video" it may well be winter time, until we get the device.

There were always turf wars between the various platforms, or even within a single one (eg N-series vs E-series).

September 23rd has been quoted to be release date from a Swedish carrier. So hopefully unlocked phones will get out earlier.

Another one stated (can't find the source right now) that Telenor in Norway has negotiated the sole distribution rights for Norway with Nokia for September.

I think it will open the app.

in Austria 3/4 carriers will feature the N9 in their portfolio

A1, T-Mobile and 3 signed deals, while the third biggest provider Orange is still in negotiations

this makes me especially happy since the X7 is only available at 3 and nobody cared to feature the E6 by now
