Wooohooo... like those one-time Hyper-V (their own product) patches that in 2009 were submitted? You're kidding.

Microsoft don't contribute to the kernel as such. Microsoft released some
kernel level drivers for getting Linux to work on Hyper-V virtualization. These were put into the kernel-staging area, and then were left there unmaintained for a while.

When the maintainer of the staging branch threatened to drop the drivers, Microsoft engineers started with updating them again. Soon, activity dropped off, and i think they are still being staging-only (in German only).

And it seems they still have issues...

Wow. I point out a contribution, one that places MS in the top seven of contributors to the already closed-source binary blob riddled Linux kernel (more and more each iteration), it's safe to say that people are overlooking that Microsoft actually does contribute to Linux.

Not that they are not quite self-serving, as is Apple who's not yet released all versions and iterations of their contributions to Webkit.

Again, showing how a company that makes the minority of their money from open source does not tend to do much for the community, unless it's quite self-serving.

Red Hat would be basically the complete opposite. Without the Linux community, they would not have the revenue they currently enjoy via support and advancement of their chosen platform.

Kool-aid? No thank you. It offends my taste buds. As does a lot of the rhetoric in this thread that does not know the whole picture enough to talk about parts of it they do not know about. Microsoft contributes, but only to benefit themselves. Apple contributes, yet holds back code occasionally. Google contributes, but has held an entire iteration of their OS back from AOSP (Honeycomb) and have forked in so many different ways they've created a potential problem in the near future.

Some of these discussions remind me of the time I was listening to my nephew (6 yrs old back then) talked about how his dog (a border collie) would win in a fight against a T-Rex.

Of course I nodded and smiled at him back then.

Now he's older and much smarter... got good common sense too.

ps: no, I'm not alluding that the border collie is a metaphor of nokia, or ms, or apple... just that we have different comprehension level of things.

At least Elop is starting to understand that it wasn't the smartest of moves to set everything on fire before there was something besides the ashes to sell.

I'd still say the lesson hasn't been learned quite yet:

That's not saying that the N9 is the Nokia savior, it's not. But to take a potentially selling phone and limit its distribution and continue to push WP7 - I'd love to see real world numbers for interest in Nokia's WP7 future offerings - isn't a lesson learned.

I'd say a lesson learned would be to introduce a Mango phone sooner than later and see how well it sells. And start with a Plan B just in case - this "all-in" strategy has never worked for Nokia.

Oh dear, another 3 quarters without competitive handsets (except the N9). Without any groundbreaking annoucements (like cheap s40 with full touch), nokia will make big losses til some date next year (and maybe even after that). Ouch. Honestly I think they should do android handsets as a backup.

this guy is CRAZY. and yet they have to create a market for it since htc samsung lg,dell acer failed. if wp7 doesnt make a miracble in Q1 2012 nokia its in big trouble.
