Yes i read that long time back but that was when we were not facing this strong possibility of Maemo.org shutting down.

The point i am trying to make is IF stskeeps could also become part of the cssu team then automatically dev's who went over would still be there and AND if something could be negotiated with Nokia to enable the funding to carry on for Maemo.org but in a new light, do you see what i am trying to say here?.

The post was made in a similar light as we're in now for those who could see the writing on the wall. It was after the introduction of combining Moblin and Maemo into MeeGo, leading to a lot of soul searching in the community. The motivation about the best place to put closed source components and openness of hardware still applies, as witnessed by it enabling both MeeGo Handset UX and Cordia.. or even others.

I don't really see your point, sorry. I think we're pretty much out of luck when it comes to budgets from Nokia. Best thing we can do is to put up porn ads or get some kind of income for the community to maintain our resources.

(Seriously though, you can get a massive dedicated server for what 50 EUR/month, can't we start pooling to keep the community servers running? http://www.leaseweb.com/en/dedicated-servers as an example)

Just because the market is moving along, the n900 isn't getting any worse and at the moment there simply are no alternatives on the horizon. Which is why I have some issue with the OP talking about working N900s. Mine is still working just fine, and I expect to continue using it for a long time because it does what I want it to do and there isn't anything out there that can replace it.

The post isn't much different from the counsel thread, since is another thread talking about where we should go forward. Certainly for all intents and purposes of the future, Maemo is dead. It can't be easily moved to different hardware and there are some aspects that will never be open enough to modify. That is all a given.

So, the obvious way forward is to support developments that follow the spirit of Maemo, and right now that is MeeGo and Cordia. It doesn't need to be exclusively so, but that is what we have right now. I suspect as things wind down, this forum will be more development-oriented as without commercial hardware, we probably won't have too many consumers.

Cell phones are always going to be tough target for open source, since typically they are not open platforms and manufacturers typically design for a lifecycle of two years. Tablets have a similar problem to a lesser degree. Without a commercial sponsor, it is going to be tough for any open source project to gain some traction. It is why MeeGo is currently the best hope, because it at least is getting support from some big guns.

I've been buying expensive, niche devices from Nokia for some years now - 770, N800 and now N900 (truth be told, the 7710 with its Series 90 system turned out to be a one-of-a-kind niche too).

I trust Nokia - to follow through on not selling the N9 directly here in the US, to not build new devices based on the pent up interest in the N9, to put all of its serious smartphone eggs in the WP7 basket - come what may.

I've tried to replace the N900 - and couldn't. Mine's still working well, since December 2009. But it's a little long in the tooth these days. The N9 is very attractive.

Dead (or dying) on arrival - probably. But, out-of-the-box it will do a lot of what the N900 does (for me - maybe not for others) - and there will be applications to do many of the things I need. As there were/are for the N900. So, I am likely to spend yet more money on a Nokia niche device.

That there be a community around the N9, as there was for Internet Tablets and the N900, would be good. Is it the Meego community? I'm not certain. The N9 doesn't really run Meego - but there seems to be sufficient intersect that a community could span what the N9 is and what Meego could become.

A wait and see exercise, I suppose.

The forum content was addressed in the last council meeting. I'm pleased to see we will be having a community vote on our future.

Tekki, I second Your idea of creating new, technical focused thread on Cordia, CE and other possible solutions (Your long term ideas). Only one question - can moderators promise us, that technical thread will be moderated much more strictly (Texrat, I'm looking at you using lonely dog eyes ).

I really like to discuss more technical related ideas, but at the same time, i don't want to see even a chunk of abil there (unless he mysteriously metamorphose into something useful).

Jokes aside, will it be possible to create such a thread, or we are doomed to perform pointless ideological discussion in *every* thread about future plans? I'm not insisting, that every ideological discussion is pointless, but it's pointless to discus ideology on every future related thread. Complicated, but I think brighter ones know what I mean

Ps.

Someone mentioned Cordia/Meego CE/ CSSU as alternatives - AFAIK, Cordia implement/plan to implement most of relevant CSSU updates (by relevant, I mean ones that are sane to implement in Meego core device). So, although CSSU is indeed little different project, many bits from it are almost automatic contribution to Cordia (not direct, I must admit)
