GPS sees 5 sats fine. But no mapping occurs. Showing installed maps says there are none. IS this correct? Do other units say there are no maps installed?

I don't believe there are any maps installed by default. There wasn't in OS2008beta on N800. Download what you need under Maps / Available Maps (do a Refresh). They are free.
