Why would you say that? Epoxy applied to the sides of the connector before it breaks is helpful, as long as none gets in the receptacle.

Something came in my mind: If you don't get an USB connection with your cable, try it with the battery inserted, that worked for me
And something else: did anybody experienced the problem, that solder got into the socket and plugging something in was impossible? (I used a lot solder, for a good attachment) That has broken at least two USB sockets for me, and I had a lot of work to get it off again.. After that I used a connector plugged in, surrounded with a piece of kapton tape. That worked, but almost broke my socket. Any better solutions?

It seemed to me that N900 won't power up at all without battery, so I'm really wondering what you all are talking about when you suggest to insert battery
Well, I'd use silicone oil or - even better - graphite
