It appears I spoke too soon. After playing around with the N800 for a good hour, powering it off several times and bringing it back to life by plugging it in the N800 decided to not power on at all again, not responding to anything I did. It's out of my hands now and on it's way back to buy.com via UPS. It looks like I'll be without for a couple more weeks. Hopefully the replacement will function as it ought to - it really sucks that such a neat device is being plagued with these kinds of problems.

Agreed. If you paid $200-500 for something then it should work as advertised. If it doesn't, then either it's made by Microsoft or you deserve your money back.

Just another data point...

I received an N800 as a gift on 12/12 and it's also exhibiting the power on/off problem.

None of the suggested tricks worked for me except to just wait and try it again. If I wait an hour or two after powering down, I have about a 50/50 chance of success.

I tried pulling the battery for different intervals and it didn't improve the success rate.

I managed to flash it. I didn't upgrade to OS2008. I just reflashed the current version thinking it might correct something, but no.

This unit was also purchased at buy.com. I'm planning to return it.

Quite probably. However, keep in mind that it's often the people experiencing problems that come to forums like this, seeking threads like this one. It's a self-selecting sample.

Their return policy is decent - free shipping back, all you have to do is print the shipping label and find a UPS outlet or schedule a pick-up. The turn-around time seems annoying - they quote it might be as many as 10 days when it gets there, but hopefully I'll get a good one in return; if not I'm going for my money back.

Obviously we are talking about a sample from the N8XX universe. The point was to demonstrate that it was'nt an isolated issue. More strange was that it affected the N800 and the N810 too...

after a week of good times, flashed to 0.19. Don't know that that has anything to do with it, but the blasted thing won't power up now. The Nokia screen appears, the charger icon appears for a few seconds and disappears. Tried everything suggested in this thread to no avail. Will return on the principle we shouldn't be messing with this after spending $479.

Two things I noticed: does everyone's power plug not entirely insert into the tablet, ie, you can still see part of the metal plug?

And second, there IS a data stamped vertically on my circuit board and it's 2003!!

Yes, on mine at least.

Impressive. From your $479 comment, I assume it's an N810? 'Twould be odd indeed if they'd been making the PCBs for N810s since 2003. (Or for N800s or 770s, for that matter!)

I agree. I can't imagine any reason a component within a new n810 should be showing 2003, especially prominently stamped right under the battery. JandR rep didn't resist a refund authorization at all after hearing about failure to boot and the 2003 angle.

Well it's good to see I am not alone. I just purchased an N800 from Buy.com less than a week ago. I have the power on problem as well.

If I power down while not connected to a charger, I can't turn the unit back on unless I pop the battery out for 30 minutes or more. Even if I connect the unit to the charger at this point, I do not get the charging icon...just a black screen.

This morning I found that if I plug the unit in and then power it off by hitting the power button on the top and going to "switch off," it displays the "charging" icon on the black screen and I can immediately turn it back on using the power button.

It's so strange and frustrating! I am debating as to whether to send it back in. If this problem is so prevalent I don't want to send it back and wait 2 weeks to get another unit that has the same problem. Is this something that occurs on a majority of units? It seems a pretty common problem with those purchased from buy.com.
