A reasonable presumption, but not automatic. To make some analogies, the internal flash on the NIT is equivalent to a PC's hard drive. But in a PC, there is a separate 'store' called a BIOS which may effect performance. You can literally run a BIOS changing program under windows (which can up the clock speed), erase your hard drive and load Linux, but the new improved BIOS clock speed will remain. A more familiar (and universal) 'setting' would be in a real-time-clock subsystem, where the 'current' time would survive re-flashes.

My point is that there may be other non-volatile settings in the NIT, in hardware subsystems, that can modified by a running program (say OS2008), which will survive a reflash back to 2007.

Of course, I am *not* familiar with the specifics NIIT's hardware, so my examples may be completely wrong, but I just wanted to point out, that it is not automatically a crazy thought that settings can remain between changes of OS on any/every platform.

It's a kernel issue, so this is not the case—flashing back to OS2007 will get you back to 320MHz.

I have my new nice N800 and I am very happy.
But I would like the new OS, beta is ok, bleeding edge and such.

But my tablet doesn't want to. I am sitting on an XP machine, I have downloaded the right OS2008 file and saved it.
I start the Wizard, give it the location of the bin. It starts and then it stops. The warning is something like "battery low or USB cable disconnected".
But the batteries are still full and the cable is still there, but my tablet is in vegetable state. I can flash back to 2007 fine (but I have to reconfigure, which is not fun :-(, so I would like not to do that too often). I tried multiple times always the same result.

Anybody else having problems to flash to OS 2008 ?

Just got my shiny new N800 and couldn't be happier with my purchase. OS2007 was a good start, but flash videos were unwatchably slow and Opera didn't work right on a lot of Web2.0 sites (Facebook comes to mind). I made the leap to OS2008 and haven't looked back; the browser has yet to not work on a site, it's only crashed on me once (with a ton of other things open) and the system is very noticeably faster (being clocked to 400MHz and all). Skype crashes consistantly ~10 seconds into a call, but I only know 1 person that uses Skype so I don't much care. Personally, not having the couple applications ported to OS2008 is an acceptable compromise for a much better experience. I also just installed scratchbox and the Maemo SDK and I'd like to tinker around with custom kernels and maybe even some applications.

One problem I consistently have is is the pdflush process eating 100% of the CPU and locking up the system. I don't know if it's a fluke thing (I did a restore from OS2007) or if this is common. I'd like to play with booting off MMC too as I expect it will run much faster without the compressed filesystem. I also get MUCH higher read/write speeds to the SD cards as it is.

Anyway, that's my 2 cents. Sorry to ramble on, I just love this thing and I'm sure glad I bought it. Back on topic, if you haven't tried OS2008 yet, I highly recommend it. If you can't afford to wait for a specific application though, it's probably worth waiting to upgrade.

EDIT: My flash worked flawlessly the first try too. I'm running Linux on my desktop already, so maybe that helped. I have no experience flashing with windows and I'm sure I never will.

I've been running the OS2008 beta for a couple of weeks now and overall really like the new look and feel. After a few days however I noticed that the system became really sluggish - clicking on a story in the RSS desktop app would take a long time for the RSS reader to pop up, for example, and sometimes starting a new web browser would be quick, other times I kept clicking because it seemed like it didn't register my action but then three or four browser windows would pop up after 30-40 seconds.

Is anyone else having the same issues? I've done some searches but really haven't found anything. The one thing I'm trying tonight is turning off VM - I had it set to 128mb (max) as I have a 2gb card in the internal slot (4gb in the external for mp3s and pictures) but I read some posts tonight that seem to suggest having VM on actually slows the system down. I'll give that a whirl once the West coast USA maps finish downloading (seems to be taking forever, but I want to try it out and pair it to my Palm gps module).

One thing I really love so far in OS2008 is the new navigation via the dpad. Before it was pretty worthless how it just jumped to the next link, but now its very usable for scrolling when you hold the dpad down (and still can select links with quick presses - excellent!). Like opening apps, however, sometimes it works instantly and sometimes I'll be holding the pad down for 20-30 seconds before anything starts to happen.

Anyway, would appreciate any comments on the sluggish response.

I got serious problem after i install this my internal memory bay cannot read any cards anymore any sd card i put it when i check on the control panel it says no memory card inserted =( can some pls help me i just bought my n800 and im afraid that it will not be fix pls help me thank u

I assume you have already switched the device off, and done a fresh cold boot. If that didn't resolve it, then you'll need to try to identify what is going on when it is getting sluggish.

I'd suggest installing "osso-statusbar-cpu". It puts an icon in the tray that shows CPU load and available memory, and if you tap on it you can "Show processes" to see the top resource hogs. You can also get the same kind of information (but no pretty graphics) by running "top" in the X-Terminal window.

For one thing, be certain to put the back cover on before you try to access the internal card. There is a small square black magnet in the top-middle of the back cover that tells the N800 to unmount the card when the cover is off. Also make sure the magnet didn't come unglued off the cover.

Technut's right, install osso-statusbar-cpu and watch the usage. You can also fire up xtrem and run top to see what's going on too, but the trick is to have it already open since you won't able to get it up when the device is bogged down.

I was having a lot of issues with pdflush eating up all the CPU power and locking up the system; particularly when I had the RSS feed reader open. I've also read that the multimedia scanner can eat up resources badly too, but I personally haven't had any problems with this (unless of course that's what's cause pdflush to go nuts).

My guess is you are seeing the same problems I had. I've since re-flashed my N800 and stopped using the RSS reader so much and haven't had the problem come back on me yet. It does boot up much faster now too .

Thanks Technut & skeezer; I've tried installing osso-statusbar-cpu from the application manager but I get an error message that some hildon application packages are missing (hildon-libs0, hildon-status-bar-lib0, libdbus). Does this mean I'm missing a repository? I currently have:
