I see what you're saying, but I disagree: when I'm waving around the best part of US$1000, it's only about me.

The 'root' in the ls output means that root owns the file, not that you are root. 'whoami' is correctly telling you that you are logged in as user. You must become root to mess with files owned by root (e.g. to create a file in /etc/apt).

As you are not already aware of this, I wish you luck in modifying these files without screwing up your device on some way. You're gonna need it

hehe nothing really horrible can happen, im not gonna go all Swordfish and wreck stuff. Its a simple "make a ****ing file" task. I had none of this in maemo5. it was just "sudo gainroot" and off i went.

My issue here is that EVERYWHERE ive looked i get the information that "once you switch on developer mode, you have full root", and theres nothing I could find that suggests theres anything else you have to do.

In addition the ls -al command gave "user" across the board instead of "root" several times last night, which made me think it had something to do with this.

Um, I'll help you once I get an N9!

Places like /etc will always be owned by root (unless something is very weird).

If you post links and specific output from the device, I or someone will try to help you. For now though, I don't know how to get root on an N9 - sorry.

Hi, does anybody know where to get an ebook reader for N9? I notice there are some in Maemo5, will they work on N9?

Yeah me neither, thats whats weird, seeing as Nokia has said that you just need developer mode enabled and youll have full root as far as I know.

Yeah, I knew I had to be root do do anything outside of MyDocs basically, at least thats how the N900 worked in my mind back in the "edit yo *** a reboot button on the powermenu" days.

Seems strange. I guess Ill have to wait for Lindegaard to tell me how the flying ballsack he did what Im trying to do here.

Apps won't take up lot of storage. The crucial factor is how much music you have. I have 150 albums which take up 12GB so 16GB is definitely not enough for me. If you don't see your music growing beyond 10GB, I'll say 16GB is enough.
