This post explains how to get the maps for the OS2008 map program without downloading them IF you already have the NAVKIT. If you don't own the navkit then this post won't really help you.

==============

When OS2008 was in BETA I downloaded USA West for wayfinder. I was lucky and got it to download completely.

I could NOT get the USA East map downloaded. It kept timing out. Either my ISP was now blocking the maps or they were just that slow.

ANYWAY I figured out a secret: The NavKit USA maps included in the NOKIA USA NAVKIT are the EXACT SAME MAPS. The application is updated but the maps are the same.

LOOKING AT FILES:

The file "map.lst" in the new wayfinder MAP directory has these lines:
USA East;f5d3a5590c7b5a2d4e4a217f90c89b6f;768728190
USA West;1b4a68a4f5c7b09a4d3e7f89ad5de6f6;719908939

The file called version.txt in the mapdata directory which was created and downloaded from the "official" site using OS2008 had the following:
Version: 2.2.1.347
Title: Mapdata West USA
GUID: 1b4a68a4f5c7b09a4d3e7f89ad5de6f6
Vendor: Tele Atlas N.V.
Map version: TA2006.10
Copyright year: 2006

NOTE that the GUID line matches the number in the map.lst file.

========================
I couldn't get the USA East downloaded using OS2008 from the official site. But when I looked at the file version.txt in my old saved NAVKIT mapdata directory... guess what it had?

Version: 2.2.1.341
Title: Mapdata East USA
GUID: f5d3a5590c7b5a2d4e4a217f90c89b6f
Vendor: Tele Atlas N.V.
Map version: TA2006.10
Copyright year: 2006

NOTE THAT THIS GUID also matches the map.lst file
=======================

DIRECTORY NAMING MADNESS
(Bear with me... it's kind of hard to explain this.)

My west maps were in a directory called H:\map\mapdata

On the OLD system the maps were in a subdir called "mapdata_USA East". The "active" map was in "mapdata". Apparently when you "set" the map it will change the directory name to "mapdata" and the one you are switching "away" form gets renamed "mapdata_USA West" or "mapdata USA East" depending on what you switch FROM.

So I created a new directory called "mapdata_USA East" and copied all the file from my OLD NAVKIT memory stick's "mapdata_USA East" directory into that dir.

=================
Then I fired up the OS2008 map program... and voila. It worked.

It was on West already. SO I had two directories:

H:\map\mapdata
H:\map|mapdata_USA East <<<-- Note the SPACE

I used the menu option in the Wayfinder application to change the map to the USA East map and then I looked at the directory names again:

H:\map\mapdata
H:\map\mapdata_USA West <<<-- Again note the SPACE

==============
It looks to be workings as intended.

So if you don't feel like attempting to download these maps and failing... then try this out.

Of course this all works only if you have the files on your old flash stick. Although I think you might be able to download the navicore map CD in an ISO format. I'm not totally sure. (You used to be able to.)

NOTE: You now have to download the voice files if you want the bitb to tell you where to go and how to get there.

Cheers and GOOD LUCK!

In order to bypass the "normal" method of downloading maps you have to have a license key for Navkit. Then you can get to a place that will allow you to download the DVD with the maps on it.

Sadly though if you have a license key then you already have this DVD and therefore already have the maps. (You also have a flash memory card with the maps on it.)

If you don't have the key... you will have to download the maps in the normal fashion. Which is going to take forever because they are being hammered.

You do this inside the OS2008 map tool. There is a menu option for maps and tabs on that that let you downlaod them. I gave up on that because it kept timing out... which is why I figured out how to use the Navkit maps.

Apparently not in USA West, USA East, or Canada-Alaska. At least I can't find it in those.

I have just upgraded to OS2008 and couldn't download any maps for wayfinder. This post provided the answer, thanks to keithlm for posting it.

I took the maps from my Navicore Personal DVD.

Thanks again.
