A Debian based Distro would make sense if your used to your N900/N9.

I use the lasest Ubuntu x64 but install gnome-panel.
This creates a Classic Gnome interface as I am not keen on Unity in a Desktop environment.
There are still loads of updates coming through for 12.04 as it was only realised recently.

Ubuntu, Mint or Debian
It depends on what you want to do with it also.

I just want to get into it, or at least give it a try. TBH I'm getting hacked off with Windows so I want to try some easy form of Linux.

I would also like to become more proficient at all the coding I come across amongst these pages - most of what I see is way over my head so I want to learn more about what some forum members are so expert at.

And as well as my experiences with my N900s and now my N9 I also did a shed load of coding on my Pioneer satnav - WinCE Core 5.0 - and re-wrote a lot of the UI/GUI, so it's not as though I'm a total noob.

Ubuntu 12.04 will be the best experience for a total n00b since mint with it's cnammon and mate and all the other gnome fork thigys hast lost some of the traction it had.

Hmmm... so would LiLi/Ubuntu be a good (easy) way to start?

GENTOO!!!
just kidding, for someone just getting into linux from windows mint is probably the safest route

yes, it will even download the image for you if you want

Haha! Ubuntu - but which one???

Looking through the LiLi download pages and there's 19 Ubuntu versions. I'm at a loss already
