did you tried to reboot the device ? or go to application manager and click on refresh and wait untill it done .

go to HAM (hildon application manager ) and not FAM ( faster application manager ) 
and click on download then click on top bar then refresh and if it works and refreshing do not stop it and wait

did you tried to remove some applications ? and what you have installed on your N900 ?

ok before removing the apps go and clear you conversations then re-open HAM and refresh
and go to x-terminal and type :
df -h /
then you will see an output . how much used space you got ?

i think the only way to solve this is to install rootshm and since you cant so anyone cant help you here
i suggest disable all repos and search google how to add them again and if that worked install rootsh
if not then google ''rootsh.dep for n900'' and download it to your phone and just click on it via file manager

I tried it without openin app manager.It tells the same thing
